Default Y8 head onto my B1 block, what's the timing off a half tooth thing?

I tried searching and since "Y8 and "me" are too short, i came up with like 900+ threads with stuff i didn't want.

I've heard the cam timing of the Y8 is off a half tooth when putting it on a pre Y8 block, i've heard the only way to correct it is with an adjustable cam, i've also heard using my stock cam gear will correct it, i'm soooo confused, someone enlighten me.

You use the Y7/Y8 cam gear to correct timing issues when using 1.6 heads/cams on 1.5 blocks. It only works on 88-95 motors though so youre probably gonna have to get an adjustible cam gear.

Isn't that an 8 valve motor? If so, you'll be 8 valve reliefs short.

No, it's 16, and i've already driven the car, just feels doggy, i blamed it on still running DPFI.

Edit: So, if a Y8 cam gear corrects timing from 88-95, if i used an 88-95 cam gear on a Y8, it'd cancel it out, right?

I think it would do the opposite of what the Y7/Y8 cam gear does for the older motors and mess your cam timing up even more.

Y8 onto an 88-95 is supposed to be retarded 4.5 degrees, so, an 88-95 cam gear should advance it 4.5 over the Y8? 4.5 advanced + 4.5 retarded = 0...right?

For the right timing you need an adjustable cam gear,,

Is it advanced or retarded, and by how many degrees?

y8 on a d15x block. You will be one tooth advanced or retarded. You get to choose when you do the install.

Get an adjustable to correct that half tooth. Or.... use the stock gear and retard the cam timing by one tooth then advance the distributor to full advance to compensate. It will run fine but will be far from ideal. If you do it the other way around you will have detonation.

I got the skunk gear but two of the allen bolts stripped when I tried to torque them. If you get a skunk replace the allen bolts with a high grade hex nut before you do the install.

how about he will be straight up on the timing?

1/2 + 1/2 = 1 tooth

-1/2 - 1/2 = 1 tooth

OR

-1/2 + 1/2 = zero

Mind you, this issue has only been around for 8-9 years

The stock cam gear as the Y8 gear or the B1? I'm assuming Y8 because i retarded it a tooth after i got the engine running and the car barely ram.

Did you adjust the ignition timing at the distributor? If not twist it all the way towards the firewall (if you retarded the cam timing). Reset your ECU after you ajust it and get a timing gun to see how far off you are.

I'll have to buy a timing light and i'm broke/jobless, i spent all my money from my last job on the mini-me , i'll have to sell stuff to buy either the light or the cam gear, i don't want to waste money on either if i can find an answer from someone that's done this.

I've done this... Its what I am driving now. I drove around on the stock gear for a few weeks till my skunk gear arrived. Just advance the distributer and drive around, if you hear knocking back it off.

I don't have a stock Y8 distributer, i guess i'll just drive it as is and buy a gear. I bought a tach and dropped the idle to where it should be and it runs rough as hell, it's definately off.

You dont need the y8 distributor, just advance the one you are using.
