anyone in here paint there own cars at home?
I didnt use anything when I did mine in my garage. Wet the floor down to catch all the airborne contaminents, cracked the front and rear roll up garage doors a little and went to down. Once your in there and have your mask on, you should be fine. After painting, walk out, leave the garage doors cracked a bit and come back when the flash time is done with.

You should have used the nason basecoat /cleacoat at the least. I only use single stage on rims. You should have looked into Diamont, its made by BASF and has some of the best tints around. Plus if you ever have to touch up it will always match(most body shops use this line when matching paint). What tip are you using??
I paint in my garage all the time. I drop plastic from the ceiling to create a booth inside the garage. For intake and exhaust fans I use 20" box fans with furnace filters on them. Before painting I turn off my furnace and water heater.
I did the same thing with the plastic. Just lined all the walls basically to a create a little booth. I used the cheapy gun from my local paint shop, which was stil $150 but looks identical to the $40 ones at harbor freight, I think they jipped me. I used the PPG OMNI Base Coat/Clear Coat setup. Only picture I have on this computer is the one below. I have pictures of it in the stages of paint as well though. Every piece was taken off, except the motor, and painted off the car, then reassembled. Deck lid, doors, interipor was gutted, front fendedrs, bumpers, hood, etc. Turned out really well though. I sold it, but I loved the car.

IF you can, switch to a 1.3 tip when you clear.it leaves a better finish and reduces the chance of runs. the 1.3 tip lays down alot better. Screw your material tip all the way in and then back it out 2 1/2 turns.
Also for ventalation just grab 2 20" floor fans. have 1 push the fumes out and the other pull the fumes out almost giving you a cross draft effect.
Other than that........I hope you're welding something also, because this is the welding and fab forum
just jokin'
i hope it works out for ya.

I think the prolem enlies more to the result of how to keep dirt out of the drying paint and out of the spray. I'm painting my ek but i'm using my uncles shop, if you're going to do it in the garage or something you better make sure you blow back the garage from top to bottom before you spray. Keeping some sort of exhuast fan at the bottom of the garage door would be a smart decision, and it's almost impossible to keep dirt out of the finish since your going to be bringing unfiltered air in which may contain dirt or even bugs can make thier way in. Blowing back the garage will help to keep any cureent dust in the garage out of the finish. The best way though obbiously would be to use a paint booth, but not everyone has the access. good luck guys

, the only thing I dislike is the amount of space. It seems like at time you can be rather close to the car.

we've already done 2, and are in the process of doing one more at my friend Eugene's house. he's doign all the spraying...just basic iwata gun, and we put up plastic for walls and on the floor and make sure it's all 100% clean.
i mean, who can complain...i'm getting a free in/out paint job, a free gallon of eternal blue peral Dupont, and all i had to do was give him a 93 hatch i bought for $250 and buy a gallon of omni black primer..haha.
but, as for venting....fan in the window, closed all doors...and we all stayed the hell out while he sprayed. the paints not so bad, but the clear is horrible. he always wears a suit and respirator while in there.

Yeah, I've painted several cars. The garage is exactly perfect for painting. I have one exhaust fan blowing up into the "attic" of the garage. I hang plastic floor to ceiling around the walls to keep paint off of everything else.
It's amazing how even with an HVLP gun paint (especially clear) still gets on everything.
All in all, it's work and not exactly cheap. The last car I did was a 2 tone base/clear job. With all the masking, unmasking, and drying time it took a full 10 hours to paint that car. And over $500 in material.
But, a comparable job would be well over $2000 (I priced them first) so I guess it's still worthwhile.
