Single Stage paint over rustoleum
Ive read about problems laying real auto paint over rustoleum paint but what about rustoleum primer? Ive been doing body work on my car slowly for awhile and i throw some rustoleum primer over it once im done with a section, my current plan now is to use an epoxy primer over the whole thing then a single stage, will i run into any problems with the epoxy primer and the rustoleum primer and or rustoleum paint?

yes, actual automotive paint will not stick spray bomb paint. You will have to sand what ever spray paint you used on it. You only use epoxy primer on bare metal btw

Re: Single Stage paint over rustoleum
im talking about spray bomb primer and summit epoxy primer says it can be put basically on anything bare metal, body filler and oem finish, is this not true, i mean is this not practical?

i meant prmer but even then they are both the same thing. I mean the fact that your doing your work a little bit at a time is fine and can use spray bomb primer, it will protect it but you just cant use automotive paint on spray bomb products, it just wont lay right. They can say you can do it all you want but it just wont. you always use the same brand products when painting. Theres nothing wrong using spray bomb primer right now just when it comes time to paint the car for real you have to sand it off and then use the same brand primer as your single stage

Re: Single Stage paint over rustoleum
You can use self etching primer or depending on what your doing you can use a good cleaner and 2k primer sealer

Re: Single Stage paint over rustoleum
well just so you know i have been doing collision and paint work for 6 years and i-car certified in all fields. And my dad has been doing it for 48 years. I use ppg products and when using ppg products you have to use ppg products all the way through the only other brand you can use with it is onmi and thats because its made by ppg. You cant use dupont and then spray ppg or sherwin williams over top of it and expect it to stick right. They are two totally different products. And if you would have read what i said you would have seen that i said you can use it you just have to make sure you sand it off before you spray anything else. You may think i dont know anything, but with my fathers experience passed on to me and the fact that hes most reputable shop in our area and putting out over 30 cars a week
i would say i know a little something.

lol, he probably could, then maybe it could be a could be a good fight. The reason im sayin you cant mix different brands together is because its happened to him twice and when you have a customer come back and then you have to fix it for free trust me you dont do it again. You learn from experience. And my dad has taught me alot 48 years worth. Thats a lot of rights and wrongs hes learned and then passed to me. You can even go to your paint supplier and they will tell you same thing. If you want to spray different brands and also spray your car down with rustoleum then spray epoxy down on top of it have right at it but if/when it starts to react and peel in a year or two you'll wish you didnt do it. thats all im saying. Its happened before and it can happen again. Yeah it may have been a freak accident but its happened and when something like that does happen you dont do it again

and i do understand that, yeah we put out alot of cars for our area and compared to the other shops ours isnt exactly up to date. But I still wouldnt do it just for the "it may" factor. Its alot better to take precautions and not have to redo it later.

Re: Single Stage paint over rustoleum
I agree with precisionsc54. Some brands are compatible with others. Lots of people do it. I've used glasurit base with ppg reducer and ppg clear on top. I done hok with ppg clear. Actually a lot of people do that especially in the lowriding industry. Some people like hok but don't like their clears and use ppg or dupont instead. Most lowriders have multi stage paint jobs and many times use different brands of paints when doing graphics. It's all trial and error and also takes years of experience knowing what's compatible with what. If you don't try new things you'll never learn new things. In fact I also tried using ppg 2021 clear over spray bomb tri coat from paint scratch for and Escalade bumper to work with no issues. It was a friends Escalade and they were on a budget and wanted a quick fix for cheap. PPG paint for tri coat would have been expensive and they only needed enough to paint a bumper. So I took the chance and told them they could purchase the base and mid coat paint from paintscratch.com in a spray can and I'll clear it with some clear I had left over. I did the bodywork on the bumper, primed it, sprayed the base, then blended in the mid coat, and then cleared it with ppg clear. It's been almost 6 months with no issues. You learn something new everyday. You just have to give it a try. Here's some pics.
