Default Enigne is running like crap!

I just finnished my ls rebuild and the engine is running rough. i lined up the camshaft arrows and lines and lined the crank up to TDC. The engine started right up, but when i went to time it the timing line was way out of adjustment. I have the rotor in the dizzy pointing on cylinder number one and the inductive clamp for the timing light on spark plug wire number one. My question is why is the timing so retarded.

after you lined up the timing marks did you rotate it twice and check it again?

Have you tried adjusting the dizzy? If the cams are not perfectly set to the crank then the dizzy will read incorrectly. I know you already double checked, but a tripple check may reveal something else. Be sure the slack on the t-belt is on the back side of the motor (closest to fire wall). Only a little slak should be evident.
