So im planning to do an auto to manual conversion. I was asking around to see if anyone had a tranny for sale and one of my friends offered me a vx tranny for real cheap. i was thinking of going for it but wanted to know if anyone had ever done this combination before and what was they're experience like. i don't plan to do any racing but i do do a lot of highway driving. and wanted to know how it would handle there. Again this on a d16z6

any info would be great. also post if you have a tranny or ex/si tranny internals for sale. or just pm me.

 

It will bolt in the same as any other s20 trans (92-95). Be aware that it has very tall gears - should be great for gas mileage, but not so great for performance.

 

yes if you want absolutely no power use the vx tranny, but you will get tired of it after a while. by the way, vx trannies shouldnt be bought, they can be had for free.

 

i know it bolts up but all i wanted to know is how it and where the shift points would be approximately.

vx/cx transmissions, in my opinion, makes mileage even worse. my reason is because its so damn slow because of the long gears to the point i find myself boning out so much more just to keep up with normal traffic.

ex/si trannies i believe give me the best mileage because of the shorter gearing allowing me ease up on the gas.

 

if your going to be doing alot of highway driving and can get the vx tranny for cheap..then i say why not.. when i had the stock motor in my vx i would be around 1500-1800 rpm in 5th gear going about 65-70...

I have a vx and those gears are super long... i think its great for gas milage though

 

I know the dx tranny is tight. All the gears are spaced evenly out, which is awesome. w/ a dx block at stock fuel cutoff (which's 7k), I hit 35mph 1st gear, 65 2nd, 100-105 3rd, 130 4th, and, I ran out of road and also didn't feel like blowing my engine. My next project, is to put a z6 head on, which'll give me an extra 5-7 mph per gear.

The thing is though, today I just found out my ob1 dx tranny which has been used for the past 140k miles, 20k boosted, is FUCKED. I think it has a broken input shaft, because it shifts into and out of all gears, but when the clutch isn't pressed, it sounds like something inside's fucked. I've heard the obd2 dx trannies are sturdier built.
