Default How could I have possibly burned my piston rings????

o.k. I'm trying to figure out how I burned my piston rings.

Before my rings were burnt, at idle, white smoke would come out of my exhaust which is something it didn't use to do before. I was thinking that maybe I have slight oil leak in my turbo because I would see a little bit of oil coming from the bottom bolt that holds down the two metal plates on the exhuast side of my turbo.

Now, I don't know if the smoke was coming from the oil in the turbo, or if somehow my piston rings were already going bad or slightly fried already....which are brand new by the way.

Well, a week and a half ago I was driving in second gear. I was already at somewhat high RPM. I pressed on the gas hard and it reved really high really quick and immediately I got off the pedal. As soon as I came to a stop light a whole lot of white smoke followed me. My car was REALLY AND MOST DEFINATELY SMOKING LIKE CRAZY. I knew that something had most definatley went wrong. Come to find out.... I had burned my piston rings.

Which would explain why there was oil coming up through the piston, which is the reason why smoke was coming out of my breather hose.

I went to get a leak down and compression test done on my car. Come to find out that cylinder 1 has 80% leakage and cylinder 3 has 20% leakage.

What I'm trying to figure out is what could have possibly cause this problem.

Now I don't know if there was already a problem with my piston rings and if I made them worse by reving hign or if my revving it high is what actually caused the problem.

Or, did my car lean out (even though it's tuned) and that's why I burned my rings or what??

If anyone has any light they can shed on this situation especially from personal experience I'd greatly appreciate.

Thanks

White smoke ususally means burning coolant.. which means headgasket problems.. how old is your headgasket? are you using ARP head studs or stock?

do you have the engine apart and thats how you know the rings are bad? or is it still in the backyard mechanic guessing phase?

Also.. you might want to post your full specs.. you will get alot more reply's that way

No, it's not a stock block. It's built.

My engine is fully built. Sleeved, new pistons, piston rings, studs, valves, springs and retainers, gasket. New everything.

I know that the piston rings are bad and burnt out because of the leak down and compression test. 80% leakage in cylinder 1 and 20% leakage in cylinder 3. Plus when it first happened a lot of smoke was coming out of my valve cover breather from where my oil catch can is.

I'm still driving the car. Driving it like grandma. Slow as hell. No fast take offs. Just not boosting it at all. Not even 1 pound of boost. I'm going through about a quart of oil every 1 or 2 days.

well white is headgasket problems burnin coolant while blue is oil. SO the first thing id do would be to go ahead and pull the head thatd be the best starting point.

Maybe....but I'm burning mad oil. About a quart every day or two. Well, regardless, I'm going to have my engine taken back apart to figure out the problem. First begining with the head to see if it's the head gasket and then go from there. This sh*t sucks not being able to boost.

Like Alcoholics Anonomus... "AA", I need to go to "BA"....Boost Anonomus.

"Hello, my name is G-Phi and I'm addicted to boost". Crowd: "Hi G-Phi"! LOL!

Yep i know what your going through... im on my last option to fix my oil consumption/ smoking problem.

background: sleeved, je/eagle, b18c5, stock head, stock pcv ~10k miles on the setup.

comp test and leakdown came back perfect and no leaks.

still consuming 1qt a week ~300 miles, only smokes during warmup, and on acceleration with any kind of load on the motor. Its the blue/white smoke, so i know its oil.

I've started by replacing the turbo (charge pipe was coated with oil), but still smokeing and losing oil, since comp test and leak down came back fine, i narrowed it down to the valve seals and guides. Had them replaced and refreshed the head, and i still get the smoke and oil loss.

So now i've narrowed it even further to being a ring problem (oil rings) since compression shows the compression rings are still fine.
Now im getting ready to get new rings installed...but since im in there Im going up to 83mm, and pouring more money into getting the setup running right.

also swapping out the stock pcv for an endyn unit or something similar...
