smoke when warming up
so what could be wrong if my engine smokes when starting up. after it runs for about a minute, the smoke goes away. also, under full throttle at higher rpms, there is a little smoke(blue). what could this be? valve seals, piston rings?

Re: smoke when warming up (tominos)
as long as it doesn't burn oil, it's not rings
Mine does it too after i got an engine with 100k from the 160k motor that i blew
I get 33 miles per gallon and everything still is the same
i wouldn't worry about it if your motor isn't burning oil

Re: smoke when warming up (tominos)
Blue smoke usually means you are burning oil... this is probably because of the piston rings. I know my car likes to lay down a friggin oil slick, and I'm pretty sure it's because I have messed up Piston Rings. Hope this helps
Yea, why do you have 197%?

deffinately oil...could be your rings.
Could be headgasket though too. Only way to know would be to rip her down and rebuild.
If you hone the cylinder, you don't need oversize slugs, just new rings. Usually honing takes away .002-.005 inches, to finish off the overbore. Sometimes even less, depending on engine shop.

you can do a compression test, but that will tell you if your compression rings are good. You still have oil control rings which could be bad as well. Either way, you're still burning oil. Either run it and keep her filled, or tear it down and find your problem.

Re: smoke when warming up (jonas)
you only need oversized pistons when you bore the cylinder walls

Re: smoke when warming up (tominos)
ok...
from all the up and down motion of the piston rings in the cylinder, the walls start to wear out and wear unevenly. They also leave a little "ridge" right below the deck. So, you need to bore out the cylinders to make a nice perfectly round cylinder. The reason for honing is to make it nice and smooth so your piston rings can seat. If they don't seat, you'll have compression and some other problems.
So, if your walls aren't scratched or anything, you might be able to get by by just getting the cylinders honed. Only a machine shop will tell you what you ned to do.

Re: smoke when warming up (tominos)
Honing just removes fine scratches from your cylinder walls and smoths it out, but bore would be used if you did serious damage to you walls ie over-rev and some busted *** valves.

Re: smoke when warming up (gsr_vx_hatch)
as the old saying goes "bore to size, hone for clearance"
measure piston diameter example: actual piston diameter=4.032 in.
bore diameter=4.032 in.
diameter after honing= 4.034
amount removed by honing= 0.002 in.
generally 0.002 inch is the minimum amount removed by honing to remove the fractured metal in the cylinder wall caused by boring.

Damn, looks like my car when I run it hard. Running rich, and I pretty sure my rings are bad. Can't wait till next month to "freshen up" my motor

no, you can't bore them at home. Take the block to an engine shop, they will use a mic and judge how the cylinders look and they will tell you what will need to be done. Maybe he can get by with honing his cylinders and maybe he needs to have it bored and get oversized pistons/rings

Re: smoke when warming up (kwik2nec)
i am looking into installing diff. pistons when doing the rebuild to possibly get some more hp out of it. i've asked in other forums and tried searching but haven't gotten a definitive answer yet, does any oem honda piston/rods fit in the carbed d15 to up the compression? zc or 1st gen teg? i am looking to rebuild on a budget.
