Default Haynes or Chilton?

I'm in the market for a repair manual, which do you guys think is better, Chilton or Haynes?

Why would one be better than the other??

I personally went with Haynes because its more specific to the model years. Chilton seems to cover almost twenty something years of an accord in one shot and I figured that that might be annoying having to sift through all that information. Overall Haynes is a decent starter place but in a few places instead of telling me how to do something it would say, "this requires special tools you should take this to a dealer" or something like that. Anyway my two cents is go with haynes and if you need further info use something like the honda-tech forume

Haynes and Chilton both suck the big one, in comparison to a Helm manual. Haynes and Chilton manuals both have misinformation, both have many sections that are just generalized for every car, and both sometimes lack enough detail.

yep

Once you look at Helm manual, you'll quickly realize why everyone with a Helm manual says haynes and chiltons manual are junk.

The Helm manual is a bit expensive but if you plan to do your own repairs and maintenance, the Helm manual will pay for itself in the money you'll save by not paying for shops to do the work. The manual has like 1500 pages full of good detailed information on just about everything in the car.

The old saying applies, "you get what you pay for"

holy crap! that's alot of pages!!! is that an exxxxxxxxageration?

my Nissan FSM is only 116 pages...

but on the other hand, my sister's Chevy Cavalier FSM has 2 thick books for her year... & can be followed by a newbie wrencher...
-------------------------------------------------------------
those chilton's/ haynes manuals can be found on autozone's website for free online manuals of various models... only good for light maintenance as stated before.

haha, nope. Well, maybe give or take a hundred.

I don't remember the exact number but if you want, when I get home from work I can look and see exactly how many are in there.

Thats what makes these manuals so worth it. (detailed descriptions, pictures and trouble shooting on your specific year and broken down by motor and other factors where needed) Anyone who buys this service manual won't be disapointed.

All right, my Accord is old enough that I probably should break down and get the Helms. When I go to that site there are dozens of choices. Is this what I want?

I have a ’99 LX 4-door, I want the paper copy, and in English.

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote"> Service and Owner Information
&gt; Honda &gt; 1999 &gt; Accord

1998-2002 Accord 2/4-DOOR L4 Service Manual
Price: $70.00

Media: Paper
Language: English
Part #: 61S8400

An average of 1,500 pages of detailed repair instruction and diagrams written by Honda service professionals make this the best manual available for accurate repair. Each Section includes a Table of Contents, and many have a Component Location Index showing parts disassembly sequence, bolt torques, thread sizes, and page references to descriptions in text. Book includes Maintenance Schedules, Specifications, Troubleshooting, Special Tools, Removal/Installation, Disassembly and Adjustment. Repair instruction on Engine Electrical, Engine, Cooling, Fuel and Emissions, Transaxle, Steering, Suspension, Brakes including ABS, Body, Heating/Air Conditioning/Ventilation, Body Electrical and Restraints.

Description: Instructions And Procedures For Routine Repair Adjustments Maintenance Work Diagnosis/Testing And Removal/Installation Of Parts For Various Vehicle Systems.</TD></TR></TABLE>

Once you have a Helm Manual, you won’t be asking question, yes you will be answering question.

Final Note: if you want your car to run on the HWY then buy a Helm Manual and that’s what Honda Factory Technicians use.
