Default Sub idea....feedback

I was thinking about putting my rear flooring back in and having a custom box to fill the space where my spare used to be. When complete it would be only the face of the sub showing with a grill over it of course. carpet all around that.

?

also this isnt my car i would have a little cargo compartment in front. CRX

It's been done. I'm sure I have pictures somewhere. I also used to know of a write up, but I haven't seen it in years. What I would do is build it up enough that you could put the carpet over the grill. Out of sight, out of would be thieves minds...

Haha, I can't find the site, but if you look up info on finding chamber volume using water, and read up on some basic fiberglass skills. Here's the run down from what I remember. Use some plastic liner to line the spare well, and pour in water until you've reached the proper volume for your speaker, then measure. Then get the water out by bailing, or using a shop vac (Wet/dry), and then line it with aluminum foil. Then comes the fiberglass work. The idea of this was to have a tight fight, but it's also removable. As for the building it up that I'm talking about. You would want to find out the maximum travel of your woofer, and give it a quarter inch or so more than it needs, put your grill over top of that, and cut a hole, or many small holes in the cardboard crap that lays over the spare.

If you're lazy, they also make subs that fit right into the spare tire itself, I think the RSXs with the premium sound package come with these. Pioneer made one as well.
Good luck, and keep us updated with pictures if you decide to go the DIY route. I hope I at least got you going in the right direction...

P.s. Use MDF for any framing that you do, it's available at Lowes or Home Depot.

If you are going to undertake the project, I'd recommend reading up on the sound domain forums. There are a lot of considerations when doing a spare tire sub enclosure. Fiberglass is pretty easy to work with, but you need to add a few steps to properly dampen the enclosure (so the sub doesn't sound hollow or buzzy.) You will find several how-to articles on that forum.

I think the one I read said something about putting some sort of foam or rubber between the fiberglass and sheet metal. I can't be sure though, I could hide my own easter eggs. Read read read is the best thing I could say, there are tons of box building sites. Personally, I have a 10 in a small bandpass box. Doesn't matter as the car isn't running though. I'm the death dealer to rods and rod bearings haha. I hate me so much.
