Default turbo for my sohc build... (need some input)

Alright guys, looking for some good advice from y'all. I'm in the process of a vtec d16 build but I'm having trouble deciding on which turbo use. Build consists so far of Manley rods, CP pistons, ARP studs, Comp 59300 cam, y8 block sleeved by AEBS, z6 head mildly ported, One-Fab top mount and downpipe. The goal is 500+whp w/o nitrous @ approx. 9.5:1, making a nice powerband.

After having consulted with friends, etc. I've been debating over the following: GT30R, GT35R, and possibly a GT4088. I'm open to other suggestions, however.

I've searched, and am aware of some of the advantages each turbo offers, but now I turn to y'all for some input.

tia

haha, a Gt40 on a sohc, yeah freakin right. I wouldn't go bigger than a Gt30R, seriously anything bigger is overkill.

just an fyi your going to need to port the hell outta the head otherwise its going to be a MAJOR hinderence for power... And a gt40 would never spool lol. I would get a gt35r it might get you there but the "nice powerband" you speak of will be all of 1500rpm

you are not gunna get anywhere with a mildly ported head, the SOHC heads just cant flow well enough for high HP applications if you are shooting for 500whp i would get a t3/t04e 60 trim with a ballbearing center cartridge, you'd be pretty much maxxing the turbo out but you'd have the most midrange and you'd be able to hit your goal. Also more on the head get a very aggressive cam although the zex is a great cam i dont think it'll be enough for your goals aka you can get 500 easier with a larger cam.

Right on, I'm gonna try out this cam first and see how well it performs. I like the l/d times, but you're right I may need to go more aggressive. I thinkin of sending the z6 head off to Larry and seein what he can do with it

LOL @ you, he isnt going to bust his transmission there are plenty of cars making 600+ on stock trannies, preloading it what saves them if you know how to drive it wont be an issue...

just cause a large turbo spools doesnt mean the tranny is gunna explode, read his post we arent talking about launching nor shifting, he says because the power will be made soooo quickly thatthe tranny will break, i dont think so

I think 500+ on a D16 is asking for a lot. I'm fully building my F23 SOHC w/ CP pistons, Crower rods, Benson sleeves, Port Flow head, Ferrea valves and Web Cam Cam shaft and I don't expect to reach 500hp. You have to consider you're asking for 300+ hp per liter of displacment. That's just nuts.

As for as breaking a tranny when a turbo spools. Are you kidding? The car is already moving so it's not like a launch condition with the car static. The tranny will be fine.

Lastly I vote for GT30R. There are several cars out there making over 500hp on this turbo. It'll at least spool soon enough to make it fun to drive.

i have seen a few 500 whp SOHC's at the track and they dont break tranny's maybe its because they know how to preload and not expletive it up,maybe you just dont know how to drive
