shaft play?
How do you tell, if there is too much shaft play and a rebuild is needed? Im new to the turbo thing and have nevere had a new turbo. Mine has some play but dont know how much is too much.
i actually bought a used t3/t4 off ebay, and the seller told me it didnt have any. Didnt tell me, "yea, it has some" no he said "no shaft play" well ive learned from reading alot that if the turbo is not on the car, and oil is not in the turbo, the compressor wheel will have more shaft play than when its on the car, and oil is in it...also, its a definate if your compressor wheel goes in and out, not just side to side. thats a bad sign. i mean if it moves a half inch left and right, id say its time for a rebuild. put it on, and if you got white smoke, or oil leaking from the turbo or the exhaust, then your seals are bad, and needs a rebuild. to my knowledge i have described everything to when you might need a turbo rebuild...good luck man, if you need a site that rebuilds turbos, let me know...hope to have helped ya, atleast a little bit
thanks guys. I have no in and out play and not enough play to hit the housing side to side. This is with no oil in it. I may be good for a little while then. Cant wait to get it on. thanks again
