Precision Turbo Shaft Play
I bought a Precision sc61 about 2 months ago..I was looking at it today and noticed a white ring on the compressor housing where the blades spin. I felt for shaft play and there is absolutely no in and out play but there seems to be quite a bit of up and down movement. Is this normal or do I have a defective turbo? When my car idles with its big injectors it pops a bit and when it does and im looking in the turbo I can see the shaft move slightly on each pop.Just curious to see if anyone else experienced this or if I have to send it in..

it has oil in it..im currently using it..I just don't see how a brand new turbo would have shaft play like that...

Re: (1FastCoupe)
A little bit of side to side shaft play is normal for non-ball-bearing turbos because they "float" on oil. My SC61 has a little bit of side to side, and I've had no problems whatsoever. In and out shaft play is what you should be worried about.

i just replaced my sc50 i had in for about 3 months because of shaft play. it was caused because the oil return line i used for the first month and a half had a very slight incline b4 it sloped down to the pan. this might be your cause. the problem was bad enough that it would have cost about the same to get the turbo rebuilt as it would to buy a new one.
Did you ever notice any smoke after getting on it or prolonged high revs?

We just got a brand spankin new gt40r from precision and it has alot of play, i mean u can hear this thing clanking when u wiggle it, I called them and they told me it was normal for a dry ballbearing turbo. I wonder if hes just BSing or its really true.

ive heard of a few other ppl having problems with precision stuff.. poor form IMO. My gt2871r had no play at all, in and out or side to side. After 2 months, it still has none and is as tight as a muslim *****.

its normal to have a bit of up and down and thats what mine had but it got worse until it was hitting the housing..The part that sucks is I have been reading posts about people trying to get their turbo's warrantied and Precision doesn't want to work with them..I dont think it was the oil line as the cause because I have never seen smoke nor smelled any oil burning. It must be one of those factory defects but last night it finally went it wont spin now because the propellers are now resting on the housing so we will see what Precision has to say about this. I'm sure they will tell me to take a hike and then in my opinion I won't want to use precision again. I felt a SC50 turbo's shaft play yesterday that had 2000miles on it and it had no up and down play what so ever.

fullblown, if its pretty loose that is exactly how mine felt and it lasted 1500 miles. Like I said in my previous post I tested an sc50 and there was none..
