Default Auto Shifting?

I heard about this , shifting a automatic while driving , will this cause damage to the transmission?

It won't unless you really screw around with it.

It's fine if you go up through the gears.

Downshifting is a different story. Back, and forth between D3, and D4 is fine. Be careful when you go down to D1, or D2.

The ECU already picks the appropriate shift point depending on throttle position. Why get in the way of it?

It's very safe to shift to D1, or D2 when you're at a dead stop.

I've done it once, or twice before when the car was moving, and it sure responded. Shifted down, and the RPMs shot up. Not worth the risk, IMO.

And if you want good throttle response at lower speeds, just dump it into D3 when necessary.

Sell your automagic car and buy a car with a 3rd pedal easy as pie!

manually shifting won't hurt the car as the ECU will lock you out of any gear where it would cause the engine to exceede WOT shift RPM

Manually shifting an automatic is perfectly fine. I'm fairly certain that if you downshift too early the computer will override your request (at least it should). Either way, modern Accords have rev-limiters. Your best bet is to look up the maximum speed for each gear in your owner manual and memorize those numbers. <TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by Eagle16nam &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">what is the advtange from just punching it and letting it shift itself?</TD></TR></TABLE>

Because left to shift themselves, most auto trannys short-shift....shifting manually lets you go right to redline.

6th gen accords will lock you out at speeds that are less than redline for each gear

for example on 6th gen V6 cars

2nd is locked out at anything above 60 if you try to downshift (you are not locked out if you are already in that gear and above that speed) even though top speed in 2nd is 72mph

3rd is locked out at anything above 90. Again if you try to downshift at any speed above 90, you are locked out until speed drops below 90mph. Top speed in 3rd is 116mph.
