Tire Choice: Hankook Ventus RS2 vs. Toyo T1R
Which of these tires would be better suited for auto-x in a 205/45/16, running a 16x7 wheel. I have a chance to get either one for relatively cheap, I'll be doing about 4 auto-x's this summer. Any advice and/or personal experiences are appreciated.

Per the comparison test in the December issue of Car and Driver:
Autocross lap time in seconds, dry:
Hankook Ventus R-S2 Z212 - 29.86 seconds
Toyo T1-R - 30.67 seconds
Autocross lap time in seconds, wet:
Hankook Ventus R-S2 Z212 - 34.70 seconds
Toyo T1-R - 34.04 seconds
The Hankook also beat the Toyo in overall dry performance AND in overall wet performance.
If your autocrosses are normally held on dry pavement, get the Hankook.

Thanks for info nsxtacy, any idea as to how long these will hold up under daily driving + a few auto x's

Hmm, I looked at the 2 side by side and didn't seem like it. Although I don't know if the new 615's still run wide like the 215's did.
<= Currently have 17x8 wheels all around and using 225/45/17 RS2 Z212 and when I switch I'm debating between getting another set or the Azenis 615. Which ever I get, I'll probably be switching to 235/40/17

I don't think I'd be able to run a 225/45/16 if that were true.

Wow - that's HUGE! Diameter 6.5 percent larger than stock. Don't they rub? They make your acceleration within each gear worse - the same effect as if you changed your FD from the stock 4.40 to 4.13

Still pretty big, 4.1 percent larger than stock...
(205/45-16 and 215/45-16, either one should be fine.)

migs is right, the T1R is an extreme summer tire. Quite good in the wet, which is why I got them. Really quiet while driving. Haven't tracked them yet but I will this spring until I deem an R compund necessary. Big Phat R has them in 16's and has had track experience with them.

I'm not sure what "extreme" means.
I consider the T1-R a "value top-of-the-line summer tire", meaning that it is the top of Toyo's line of summer street tires, its performance is not at a level of the very best street tires around (e.g. Goodyear F1 GS-D3, Bridgestone S-03, etc), but it doesn't cost as much as those others, either. I put the Kumho MX in the same category. They're both good choices for someone who wants something a bit better than "budget performance tires" like the Kumho Ecsta SPT or Yokohama ES100, but doesn't want to pay as much as the best street tires cost, and doesn't want to live with the rapid treadwear of a specialty tire like the Falken RT-615.

(225/45/17 is stock for STi)
