Sorry if this is a dumb question but what is the difference in putting a 215/45/16 on a 16x7 rim as opposed to 205/45/16?

205 / 45 / 16

The first set of numbers is the COMPLETE width of the tire from wall to wall. Not just tire patch. 205 is the diameter in MILLIMETERS.

25.4 millimeters = 1 inch

205 millimeters = 8.07 inches

The SECOND set of numbers is the aspect ratio ot the width. So, in there is a 45, meaning 45%.

45% of 205 = 92.25 millimeters = 3.63"

Since there are TWO sidewalls to a tire. You have to multiply that by 2.

3.63 (2) + 16 (diameter of the wheel) is = 23.26"

23.26 is the OVERALL diameter of the wheel/tire combo.

The difference between 205/45/16 and 215/45/16 is 0.36"

Thanks migs . BTW I did know what the numbers stood for I just wasn't sure if there was a big difference between the two and apparantly there isn't. But yeah thank you.

depending whether u drop the car or not..or the offset of ur wheels, that little differnce can mean rub or no rub

u should be safe with 205.....but i wouldnt go any bigger.
I used to rub my 205 on my 95 coupe.
