Just how bad for a motor is "running out of gas"
Lately ive been pushing it REAL close to running out of gas since im like broke. ANyways how bad for a motor would this be? Esp. like my motor built and around 11.5:1 compression, I know it couldent be good but could it actually lean out right before it runs out causing detonation?
I've heard it puts more of a strain on the fuel pump when it starts to get real low like that...not sure if it could lean it out like the way you were saying...anyone else want to add to this?
all that crap from the bottom of your gas tank is being sucked into your engine. you should replace your fuel filter afterwards if you actually did let it run out of gas

iono.....just a thought.
I've run my lawnmower out of gas 8 billion times and it's still goin. The worst part is that it does suck up all the junk in the gas tank.... thats the worst part. I think doing it on adiesel is far worse due to the high pressure fuel systems.
Ok think about this you come home and turn off your enginev off, wouldn't the same thing happen if you ran out of gas??? Yes nothing bad happens. And if you are going to shoot back with a question like well what if I'm driving along at at around 3 of 4 rpms and then I run out of gas? Well think of it this way pushing the clutch in at 3 gear, shifting into N, almost the same thing happens except your engine doesn't stop. NOTHING BAD HAPPENS IF YOU RRUN OUT OF GAS. I did with a 1986 944 Turbo Porshe and it was running fine the other day.

So what is a good cleaning agent that will remove old glue without harming the finish?
And is it my imagination, or does my overall fuel efficiency drop if I run the tank down?

Fuel surrounding your fuel pump also cools it. If your running on empty, the fuel originally around your pump cooling it is now being used and you risk damage to your pump.

I agree, mechanics will tell you that a pump running dry has nothing to cool it and will damage it. It normally is sbmerged in gassoline that keeps it cool, if it sucks air it runs faster trying to pump something and at the same time has nothing to draw off heat generated.
I actually get decent mileage... ~29 mpg in the winter, mostly highway, some city. I'll get one or two more mpg in warmer weather. I asked only because it seemed like I'd get a better mpg average when I filled up a little sooner.
