on the EG it is pretty much below the battery on the transmission, there is 1 10mm bolt holding it in

unbolt it and unlpug then inspect the gear

then undo the other two 10 mm bolts the check the pieces inside

Theres a long 10mm bolt remove that and twist the whole unit and it should come right out, I say twist because of the O ring likes to stick sometimes.

yeah, there is only 1 bolt holding the gear down, its the tallest 10 mm

twist it to the right to get it out

It's probably the gauge cluster soldering coming loose, not the VSS itself. The Honda VSS units on EGs and EKs are remarkably resilient and can usually be repaired even if they break. The clusters, on the other hand, suck *** as far as quality is concerned and they expletive up all the time. You can resolder things or you can get a new one.

Enjoy that.

the little pole thing did stay inside the transmission part area. i put it back together an di just got home from driving around really quick. the speedo kicked on ONCE then when i started it back up from gettign gas nothing again.check the wries leadign to the cluster you say?well thsi si the order i removed the vss. i unplugged it.there are 3 bolts around the vss. i unbolted the two that hold the unit down. i wiggled the unit off.then i unbolted the third long bolt. that bolt didnt seem to do anythign but just be there.i wanna fix this myself so i can save some cash cuz i wanna change the timing belt in my car soon.that i am having done professionally.

It's located on the backside of the tranny, it's held into place by 1 10mm bolt, remove that and you can visually inspect it. 99% of the time cleaning it will fix it.
