Why Third Gear? researched

Is the infamous third gear grind (yes, I am newly infected) the result/equal and opposite reaction of hard shifts into second or what? I dont see why the synchros get damaged as I dont think we have much trouble with entering third. Is shaft speed by that time a factor...
I'll probably pull it and fix it correctly after I find another job, layoff sucks.

Usually you get 3rd gear grind when your shifting high RPMs and not have the clutch in all the way. But itll seem like you will. Its tricky but you dont need the clutch to shift, but when doing that you put more stress on the gears.
I never had a problem with any of my gears because i make sure the clutch is in all the way before hand.
Suggestion: If its starting to grind drain it and refill it with either syncro mesh or Honda MTF.
Now if you want to go full out then pull the tranny, open the casing and get to work with a Q tip and fresh oil.

My 3rd gear grinds too but only at high RPS. Ive tried diffrent ways to shift into third and yes my clutch is in all the way trust me. its annoying. is there some simple fix to this or what?

You using a short shifter by any chance?

hm.
i have the same problem too. . .
but not only does it grind in third, it grinds in second and first when i let off throttle. i'm not using a short throw (shortshifter?) either.
is there anyway to fix it ?

I agree. I hate short shifters and IMO they are pointless. Luckily, I only tore up a couple of D series trannies before realizing this. My B's get OE shifters only. Using GM synchromesh may help the grind a little but, usually by the time you can feel it in your hand it's to late. Honda MTF for the life of tranny and Syncromesh if you're trying to milk it until rebuild.

My crx had a 1st gen b16 with a cable tranny and it always grinded into 3rd. Hydro is the way to go, I did a hydrolic conversion in my crx, it was worth it no more grinds into 3rd.
The reason the 3rd gear grinds, is because the teeth on the shifter collar get rounded down. this is how the shaft looks:
\\\\\\\\\\\
------------
||||||||||||
------------
////////////
////////
the // and \\'s are gears.
the --'s are syncro's
and the ||'s are the collar.
when you move from the top gear, down to the bottom, you ketch the syncro first, which spins up the actual gear, almost to the speed it needs to be, then you hit the gear. if you didnt have the syncro spinning the gear up, it would resulet in a CRUNCH as the collar, spinning at lets say 4000 RPM , hits the gear which is spinning at about 2000RPM
this is all fine, but when you start doing some hardcore shifts, slamming the shifter forward and back, without taking into account where it wants to go, it could start wearing down on the collar's teeth. all these lightning fast shifts give the syncro no time to speed the gear up.
the only thing i can suggest is make sure your shifts are accurate. the #1 worse thing you can do is grind gears ( yea tahts arleady F'in obvous)

yea, grind in third gear is from driver error. No other explanation needed. I'm sure short shifters sorta help narrow the error of margin that there is already.
I've ruined two b series my self. It sucks.
as skriblah just said, it is more from the higher gear to lower gear shifts, you do it so quickly, synchro can't get the gear up to speed in time. Also as said, not pusing in the clutch all the way contribues.
I know we all do this its a situation where someone revs on you and you want to downshift to accelerate after them....most of us do it, and do it sloppily (is that a word) in our haste to go after someone...

I'm not sure if anyone is still looking at this thread, but I've had my honda for about 3 weeks now, its my first... I was practicing shifting faster when I first got it and I noticed that when I wasnt revving at very high rpms and I tried to shift into second really quick it grinded. But when I actually wound it out to about 7grand it shifted really smooth. Why is that?
i grind 2nd sometimes, just driver error, you get those high rpms goin trying to make that quick shift, and whoops clutch was already out before you had your car in gear. and since the shift from 2nd to 3rd is a little longer, its more common people make the mistake on that shift
you know that NASCAR drivers only use their clutch to start and stop the car, they dont use it when shifting, of course its bad for the tranny

Its Called A Sequential Tranny. No clutch needed in between shifts, just to take off

You're right, Synchromesh (Pennzoil, at least) did nothing.
