Default Oil smell after VTEC

'92 B16 Xsi motor

I know its somewhat 'normal' for older b16's to burn some oil when hitting vtec but mine never has until recently.

During regular driving all is good, no smells or anything.

But if i push the car to the upper rpm range i get a oil burning smell in the cabin for a few seconds afterward.

Cars does not seem to have lost any power.

I have to add about 1qt of oil every other month or so.

What should I look for?

well, you are burning oil.

two possible causes: piston rings, or valve stem seals.

my money is on the rings, do a compression check

PCV.. Install a catch can. Smoke means nothing man.. I see NA 1.8's running 12's all day long and they smoke blue all the way down the track.

I have yet to see a b series vtec that dosent smoke at 8500rpm.

I used to get big puffs of black smoke when i shifted up high.. Installed catch can problem solved.

Goodluck

My b16 does not smoke at all even on 8200 stock readline Hmotors are cool as hell.

mine would smoke under the hood in the upper RPM ranges, and it took me forever to find the problem. It was just a bad O ring on the black pcv box on the back of the block. I would seal fine at low rpm but once the pressure built it would push past the O ring onto my exhaust mani

They all burn some oil up high. Lubrication is essential in the high RPM ranges, and blowby for instance is not uncommon.

Sit tight and enjoy the ride. I love the smell of vtec in the morning.
