Default D16Y8 Backfiring

I have a 1998 Honda Civic EX and it backfires like a bitch (randomly) when in first gear. It does it mosly when its in VTEC, getting ready to shift into 2nd.

Keep in mind its an automatic (if it effects anything)

What needs to be done to fix this problem?

I take it you are back firing out the exhaust? not the intake? What type of fuel sytem do you have? oversized injectors?

As far as timing, you will need a timing light and a wrnch to loosen the distributor. You will need to get a service manual if you dont have one. Read the proceedure in the manual its pretty straight forward. You will need to stop the ECU from Advancing timing, there should be a plug located under the dash possibly that you will ground the pins together to do this. Then use a timing light to see where the timing currently is at with the marks on the crankpulley. Adjust the dist to get the timing where it should be.

Sounds confusing doesnt it? its not its easy just make sure your car is warmed up and idling below 900RPM
