Sometimes mine won't get into 1st gear at a stop. I don't know the mechanics of it; I just put it into 1st as I'm coming to a stop instead of after I have stopped.

Check your oil level and make sure its just right. Also this tends to happen with certain oils and not others. I was having the same problem with my `02 but it went away when I tried Yamalube and now on Motul.

If it still does it and it will from time to time, press down on the shifter while you let out the clutch slowly and it will drop right into gear. Immediately pull back in the clutch the second it engages and your golden!

Tighten up the clutch cable.

Are you clutching in with two fingers? For arguements sake, try using all four to pull it in and see if it goes in smoothly. If it does, you need to tighten the cable as suggested.

Check these things first: Clutch adjustment. If clutch is adjusted proper, and you still have the problem, you'll have to check the internal clutch parts [spring free-play length, or the spring lifter]. If the clutch springs are weak, you might need to check and replace the clutch springs or even go w/ heavier springs. There is avail aftermarket clutch springs that are heavier then OEM. You could even check the service limit of the clutch springs w/ a service manual. If you're not mechanically incline, I'd take it to the service shop.
