What are possible causes for retarded timing?
Hey all,
I am having an issue with bogging/timing retardation more often than I did before. Before, it would bog every once in a while without throwing a CEL. Now it does.
The code that it throws now is CEL 22.....the VTEC oil pressure switch. I asked before and people said that a bad oil pressure switch sould not affect normal driving.
Any ideas? The car is getting less fun to drive now that I have to worry if the car will throw a CEL or not.
Oh, I even tried Seaform. It didn't affect the engine's performance at all.
What could be the reason for the hesitation/retarded timing? Knock sensor? O2 sensor? What else?

Have you checked yout ignition timing with a timing gun? I wouldn't think that it would suddenly retard itself though... When my car used to bog back in the day at low RPMs... It was because the timing was too far retarded at the dizzy...

I will have the timing checked.
The weird thing is, the car will run fine one time, then start bogging another time I drive it. I bet if I went to start the car now, the CEL would not come one and it woudl drive fine.
The car will run fine for a few days, then all of the sudden the CEL kicks on and the car starts to bog/hesitate. Then if I let the car sit for a while, the car runs fine. I don't get it.
Everytime I check the CEL code, it's 22....oil pressure switch.

i dont know what to say man. A broken knock sensor is the only code that retards the timing. And it retards it by 3 degrees. It's enough to make the car drive like complete ***. Its the main reason i went with the p28 ecu that i have now. But you arent throwing that code. I'd suggest getting a timing light and make sure that it is within spec. I think the timing is supposed to be ~15 degrees.
man, im still having these same damn issues.
i think im going to try find out how to insulate my knock sensor. ive had a few people tell me that. cuz if it picks up something, it'll retard the timing.

its a phearable.net p28.
It currently running a custom blundars h22 basemap. I'm gonna be getting tuned on crome pro.
