i did a compression test on my 01 base prelude. straight across 230. on #4 i did it the 1st time and it only went to 220. then i did the rest and they were 230 so i #4 again and it stayed at 220 then spiked up to 230. ive never done a compression check before. this is what i did. disconnected the ecu fuse, pulled the plugs,wires and disconnected the injectors. I know i did have to disconnect the injectors but i wanted to be safe. then hooked up the gauge-hand tight- then cranked it over about 7 to 10 times until the gauge stop. the car kinda hick-uped a little bit and when it did the numbers jumped higher. does it seem to be right. is 230 across ok. the reason why i did this is because i have smoke coming out my car. only when i down shift and come to a stop. sometime when i take off it smokes. just a little bit. Im thinking valve seals. any info would be nice-Thanks

 

youre suppose to crank it 4 OR 5 times, make sure you crank it the same amount of times on all cylinders.

 

hummm.... i didnt crank it the same amount for each. just did it until it stopped. i dont see how cranking it the same for each would matter. you dont know where the piston is if it TDC or not. you might try to turn it over just hair more which might give you the extra reads. you know what I mean.

No, you need to crank it 4 or 5 times like ludeR917 said. Be consistent in your testing (only crank 5 times for each cylinder).

 

i gues im going have to do it again. only 5 no more. but what if the gauge still goes up though.

 

how long to turn the key for? 2sec. sound about?

 

mine was doing the same thing with the smoking. my compression #'s were comming up fine and all were well within 10% of each other. You may want to do a leak-down as you most likely have the same issue it seems alot of preludes end up with, bad rings. I replaced the valve guides and also had the block work done to stick the 11:1 oversized type S pistons in. It helped alot, but I still get smoke when I hit vtec. Typically that doesn't bother me, but I don't think the guy at the christmas tree thinks too highly of it lol.

There's no magic number for a compression test. As long as they're all within about 10 of each other, it's good.

Re did the compression again. 5 cranks and everything i stated above. the numbers came out 195 straight across. do those numbers seem ok. so im guess the little smoke are valve seals?

195 across the board are good results.

I'm honestly not sure about your smoke problem, hopefully someone else can give some insight. A leak down test like rjr162 suggested might help diagnose the problem too.

 

yeah i know a leak down test would tell but the shop around here want 90 bucks to do it. i think that alot for not fixing nothing...no what i mean

 

u jsut crank it till the psi stablize, make sure your at WOT too, and u should really do the test at normal operating temps, it makes for more accurate results

 

How many miles on your car? EX valve guides tend to wear, but an 01 is relatively new. Your compression seems fine to me. Unless it's a lot of smoke I wouldn't worry about it. Oil is cheap.

 

i did run it normal op. temp and WOT. my car close to 80k on it. sorry i did include that at the top
