how to use this tester
i have one of those cheap testers that look like a pen.
what parts of the car can i clamp the clamper down to?
what part do i touch with the tip, the positive or negative?
will it still work with solder on it?

What are you trying to test?
Usually, the clamp goes on a ground point and the probe on the wire you are testing for power. If youre testing a ground wire then its reversed.
Its just a test light - you complete a circuit and the light comes on. I made my own out of wire and a bulb.

If you are checking to see if a wire has 12 volts then place the clamp on a known good ground and probe the wire. If it lights up then you have 12 volts on that wire. It needs to be a bolt that is attached to the chassis (metal to metal contact), not say one of the screws that holds the interior plastic together.
Electrical solder is conductive, so yes.
