Default ** Weird Problem ** My beater's cluster is acting up, need help

Just picked up a beater last week, which is a 92 Civic CX hatch with 164k miles. The speed odometer is have a mind of its own.... works on and off. while driving on the road at 45mph or something, it will suddently drop back to 0 and not working again... then when it feels like... it will pickup the reading again.

i thought it was the speed sensor issue, and got that replaced, but it's still doing the same thing. do you guys think it could be the cluster?

one thing i did notice was the seatbelt light, most of the times stays on, but sometimes it doesn't. (yes, i don't wear seatbelt often... i know... my bad habbit)

any suggestion and input are welcome, thanks

My tach does the same thing. I also have a CX and it didn't have a tach so I replaced it with an EX cluster and now it's jumping around like it's crazy or something. I say replace it with another cluster.

hmm
uve got the exact same problem as me

i guess it isnt the VSS on mine.. some say it is the cluster. mine has a mind of its own, ill be driving and itll say im doing 100km/h then itll drop to 0...

stay like that for who knows, liek 300km, then work again..
odometer doesnt work either.... but my tach/engine temp/gas guage/all lights work...

A mechanic at my old work has a 92 DX and it does the same thing. He told me it's a common problem with EG's. He's going to replace the speedometer with a brand new one from Honda, they're only $40 or something. If you get another EG cluster, it might do the same thing... then you just paid eighty bucks for nothing.

same thing was happening on mine... at first i thought the cluster was screwed cause i had no cel... so i punched it to see if vtec would engage and it got to 4800 and wouldnt go any more... so that ruled the cluster out for me... i took out the vss and it had water in the connector... dried that out popped it back in and all was well

a way to check to ses if it is indeed your cluster or another problem is to remove the cluster, and the front clear plastic. push up on the speedo needle, if it drops slowly, then its not the speedo, if it drops with no resistance, then you need another speedo. hope that helps

mine does the exact same thing. and my tach goes nuts most of the time too, unless i'm in vtec for some reason. i've been trying to figure out the problem for months now.

mine did this.

take off your VSS (its on the top of the tranny near the rear mount) remove the long 10mm bold first and twist it right to take it out.

look at the gear, then use alcohol and a cotton swap to clean the connector.

if you want you can do what i did and take the other two 10 mm bolts off and clean the inside of it and re lube it.
put back in reverse of removal and see if that helps

thats one thing i have done... took it all apart, clean, and replaced. still problems. i'm doing with replacing the speedo, but wondering if there was anything else besides, cleaning and/or replacing the VSS or changing out the cluster as a whole. TIA

mine does the same thing... whether seat belt on, the light off, or seat belt off light on, or any combination you can think of. but its my actual seatbelt itself. the female part of it. i've replaced it twice, once one fell apart, the other was free, so i replaced it.

why dont u guys check and see if the ground wires are in good shape or not. that could cause a problem like that. we had the same problem with my brothers type r and we changed the grounding wires on the tranny, engine.... and then every thing went back to normal.
