Bent valves. How long is it okay to drive?
Hey guys. I'm getting some tapping under the valve cover and i'm pretty sure it's bent valves. It's not extremely loud but i can hear it without putting my ear to the motor. Once in a while when I try to start I also get a cough of smoking coming out of the intake manifold also.
So anyway, I'm painting my car in about 3 weeks when school gets out and i'm going to be driving it about 10 miles total to and from the paint booth. Once it's painted the car is going to be garaged for atleast a couple more weeks and during that couple of weeks. During those couple of weeks I plan to buy stock valves and seals and try to change them myself using a trusty helms and maybe a friend. Never done it before but.... worth a try i guess.
So anyways. I'm pretty sure i'm going to be fine, but i want some educated opinions on whether you think this is going to mess anything up. Do you think the pistons would get messed up?

Well the valve will start to wear a new seat on the head so youll have to get the valve seats ground..
Also when you take the head off make sure you didnt crack any of the valve guides.. I over-reved my prelude once and cracked all of the exhaust valve guides..

first off, only because the rockers sound like they are extra loud, doesnt mean you have bent valves...Have you checked your valve lash? You cant just change your valves without having the proper machine work done....
well. I myself haven't over-revved or anything like that. What the previous owner has done to the motor, I dont know. The reason why I'm assuming the valves are bent is because when I start the car up sometimes i'm getting a small pop with exhaust smoke coming out of the intake manifold.
That, in addition to the tapping lead me to believe that it's most likely bent valves. But yeah i'm gona do a compression ******** before i mess w/ anything and i'll check lash

not exactly, you could have slightly bent valves, and the idle be close to normal, just a little on the rough side...

yes that is what would cause the valves to bend
now what did u do that u think u might have bent valves?...did ur timing belt slip a tooth?? sounds to me like ur valve seals are no good.at least on the intake side..the ticking is probably because u need a valve adjustment...dont just go assuming that something is majorly fucked up..check all the little things first

On a Honda motor, this sound can be caused by excess clearance between the valve tappet adjusters and the valve stems. The only ways that your valves can contact the pistons are to over-rev the engine or have the timing belt jump on the timing gear. I suppose that you could also crank the valve lash screws all the way down and bind the engine, but it wouldn't run in that case.
