Re: Valve adjustment help please (HavokB18)
Okay so i agjusted my valves the other day .06 intake and .07 exaust now it taps worse... opinions?
Valve clearances get tighter as you drive your car, they don't get looser. Over time, valve heads pound themselves into their seats and the stems start traveling higher in the head REDUCING clearances. If you don't adjust your valves periodically, clearances will eventually be '0' and you will start burning your valves. The reason you adjust valves is to 'open up' the clearance[s], not to make them tighter, and this is what you did, i.e. increased the gap, i.e. increased the 'tapping.'
Is it sinking in yet? That's a pun, son...

should he widen them or close them... .09 or what do you suggest
Intake .006 - .007 in.
Exhaust .007 - .008 in.
If you guys are going .060 - .090 in. on your valves, THAT is the problem...

I would suggest doing another adjustment. If you rotate the crank, but are off just a tiny bit it will cause your adjustment to be way off. Been there, done that. I put marks on my crank pulley every 90 degrees to make it easier.

Re: Valve adjustment help please (0rk)
this is a copy of my post in a similar thread in ClubSi
for DOHC I have to also say the tool is highly helpful, at least it's got to be. I don't have the tool and it is a PITA to do it without. I use a deepwell 10mm socket and thread a flat-headed screw-driver through it, and use a vise-grip on in the socket!
anyway, to use feeler guages, the best tips that I've found helpful:
1- make sure the next size bigger feeler guages DOES NOT fit.
2- usually if there is oil in the engine, the right amount of drag will "wipe off" the oil from the feeler guage.
3- make sure you hand-tighten before you use torque wrench or else it will be too tight
4- check with feeler guage AFTER you have tightened to make sure it is not too tight or loose.
for B16A, what I do is this:
on intake side make sure 0.006" feeler guage can fit, then I take a 0.007" feeler guage and makes sure it DOES NOT fit. then take the same 0.007" guage over to exhaust side and makes sure it fits. then I take a 0.008" guage and make sure that it DOES NOT fit in exhaust side. that way, I stay within spec, most efficiently.
also, turn your wheels all the way to the left, that way you can get to the crank bolt without having to lift the car..
