only difference between the b18a and b18b motors are the cam shafts on the b18b are a bit more agressive.

Everything else is pretty much the same

if you get a b18b make sure it came from an obd1 car to have the oil seperator on the back of the block all b18as have this

The B18B also has a different intake manifold and head casting. But none of this is important if you are going LS-VTEC. Both motors are the same below the head.

So does the B18B, as long as it is a 1994-1995. In 1996, they put the oil separator in the valve cover (like the B20). But it is possible that the hole in the back is just blocked off and one could be added. You might look into this. Or you could just get a B18A or 1994-1995 B18B.

Sorry to bring this post back from the dead, but this sparked some interest from me. I just bought a b18a (early model, probably 92 or 93) and tore it down. My plans are to bore it out and do a complete rebuild. I will be putting a '99 LS head on it. What is the "oil seperator" you are talking about? Will the 99 b18b head not work with an early model b18a block?

its basically a little black box on the back of the block by the oil filter. its just part of the pcv system. if you use the valvecover from the 99 head it wil have a pcv valve spot on the top of it.
