They are the same basically the same... If you are rebuilding with new bearings, pistons, etc. I would just stick with the B18A cuz it's got a PCV system built into it.... Peace

yeah, basially the same, id say if yer going to build the bottom end, get a B18a, being thats its prolly cheaper, and if yer going to keep the bottom end stock, get a fairly newer B18b, but thats just my $0.02..

The only real differences between these two motors are in the top end. So if you are going LS-VTEC, neither holds an advantage.

the b18a are 10hp less from factory. The 90-01 b18a is obd0, while the 92-93 b18a and 94-95 b18b are obd1. The 96-01 b18b are obd2. Just get the one that has the right odb-x for your car, it will save you some headaches.

That's really not a big factor when building an LSVTEC considering that all of the OBD components are focused more on the head than the block. If you use a nonOBD or OBDI block and plan to go OBDII, all you need to do is use an OBDII oil pump with the crank fluctuation sensor.

Positive crankcase ventilation... When your motor is running air and fuel can leak through your rings which goes down into the crankcase this is known as blow by...... What the PCV system does is flow air through the block in order to get rid of this gas which can break down your oil... You'll notice a breather port at the top of the valvecover which is connected into you intake... Air is sucked through it which flows down into your block -> gets that bad gas vapor out and runs it to the black PCV box on the back of the older style LS blocks where it is separated from the oil and purged into the intake manifold where it is sucked into the motor and burned up... Hope this helps... Latez
