Default Thinner headgasket, and cam timing?

After the installation of a Mugen head gasket what degrees does it affect the cam timing by? ie. how many degrees does it advance the cams?

A thinner head gasket will retard the timing of the camshafts, not advance it. I have the Spoon two ply gasket and it retarded the camshafts by approx. 2 degrees.
The Mugen gasket should be similar.

No it's 2 degrees (approx) at the camshafts. To give you a visual idea, each camshaft where off by half the width (at the tip) of a camgear teeth.

I think that is 2 degrees a cam. Wish there was an equation to figure this out...

Thats two degrees on each camgears.
When the crankshaft is aligned with it's mark (TDC), the two marks that are suppose to be aligned to each other on the cam gears are separated by the widht of the tip of a teeth. You have to advance each camshaft the equvalent of half the width of the teeth so they are retimed at "zero". This equate to approx. 2 degrees.

It is not hard to calculate. If I remember correctly, the camgears are 4" diameter, the tip of each teeth is about 1/8" wide so

(1/8 x 360 degrees) / (4"x3.1416) = 3.58 degrees. Half of that is 1.8 degrees for each camshaft (approx. of course)

I was think that you needed to advance the cam to compensate...so that's where the comment came from, just came out a little garbled.

2 degrees crank? Damn, isn't that quite a bit? So I'll advance the cams by 2 degrees crank when the head gasket goes in.
Thanks,
Austin

So changing the headgasket without viariable cam gears might hurt the performance of the engine as a result of poorer cam tunning!?

I've always been under the impression that every 10 thousandths removed was 1 degree retard on the cams.

Hey Mike, if/when they put my motor back together, you going to peal a layer off the head gasket? I should have to worry about timing or anything with that litttle of a change right?

This rule of thumb might be good. I don't have the thickness difference between the stock gasket and the two ply Spoon gasket, but if it's around 0.020" then your impression are good.

I can do it if you want, Craig.. just let me know.

I'd go with a 1 layer. Bottom black layer w/ copper spray.
