D16Z6 in a 97 Civic EX. Will it ever pass emissions?
I have a civic that has a D16Z6 motor from a older Del Sol Si. The car runs great, but has always failed emissions because it throws engine codes. Apparently it is missing the crank sensor and knock sensor. What I need to know is can I somehow get the ecu to not throw the engine check light. Is there some way of faking or turning these sensors off, since they don’t exist on my current engine? I know that there are ways around emissions but, I would rather be legal if at all possible. Any suggestions? Your help would be very appreciated.
IIRC PA uses an OBD scan for emissions on 96+ vehicles. If you don't have these sensors you will fail. If you switch over to an OBD1 ECU it will get rid of the CELs, but you will still fail emissions, because the emissions computer will be looking for an OBD2 ECU.
Get a D16Y8 or register in another state.

you could fit an OBDII oil pump with the crank flux sensor, and tap a place on the block for the knock sensor.i'm sure there's also a way to give a signal to the ECU so that it won't throw codes for these sensors(i THINK you can simply ground the KS wire and it won't throw a code.don't know about the CF sensor).
you could also,as said above, run an OBDI ECU.this won't pass a visual inspection, and obviously won't pass an OBDII diagnostics test.
do you not have a visual inspection there?most anywhere i know of,it's illegal to swap in an engine older than the car.

From what I understand PA has gone to a visual inspection to make sure you meet all physical emissions requirements... and than plug in for an OBDII scanner check
sidenote, I'm curious to hear your end results, since I have both a 96 Del Sol, and a freebie D16z6 I was going to put it in...

Yes, the motor has to be newer than the car. Thats the general rule. If you have a OBD-II car, a OBD-I engine has to be converted to the newer standard, because many places will just use the scan tool to check on 96+ cars, and if they find no OBD-II port, they will say to convert the motor to OBD-II or you dont pass.
So in conclusion, pay someone to pass you under the table.
