Default Speedometer issues..fustrating!

98 GSR...i cant stand it! i have tried EVERYTHING. ok so heres what happened. about 2 months ago i was driving and the speedo started flipping out. bouncing back and forth. if i sped up slowly it would be fine, but as soon as i got on it, it bounced around all over. then one day it stopped working. code 17, so i knew the VSS was bad. swapped it out. same thing, doesnt work get a code 17. i checked all the connections. even swapped a new VSS clip in from an extra wiring harness laying around. still doesnt work. checked all the voltages from the speedo all the way to the cluster ( checked a few clips under the dash ) and it was all right so there are no breaks in the wire. swapped out clusters with TWO other gsr clusters (i have a jdm ITR cluster now) so i know its not the cluster. the gas, temp guage and tach works, just no speedo. i just dont know what else it could be, ive tried a few different ECU's as well. any ideas bc i am STUMPED.

well i just ruled out the fact that it could be the speedo ring in the tranny. i pulled the speedo out, hooked it up to a drill and spun it. no movement of the speedo needle. the only thing i can think of is the ECU and the speedo arent getting a pulse from the VSS. gunna try that and let you guys know. evne though nobody is reading/helping!

it could be 'speedometer cable'??
just takin a wild guess.... the cable that goes from your cluster to tranny

hey i'm reading..

Did you check for vss signal at the ecu?? spin the thing with a drill again and see if there is signal at the ecu itself, on both sides of the pin in the ecu plug.

this is all i can think of. good luck mang

edit: does the vss signal go to the ecu, and then from the ecu to the gauge cluster? or does it split? or go to the gauge cluster then to ecu? sorry for the stupid question, I'm used to working on 88-91 chit

well it eneded up being a bad alternator/battery/wiring harness! changed it all and it works.
