My timing belt/mini-me adventures [part two]
Well, I finished up last night and got her started. She seems to be running fine. I'm currently running the stock auto p06 and 3/4 tank gas of 87 octane. I used the z6 timing belt and headgasket. Ignition timing is dead on the middle mark which is the red mark I think on the crank pulley.
The question: With the hood open and me slowing revving the engine, I'm getting a "whirring" sound from the timing belt area. Is this normal? Is the timing belt tension too taught?
I adjusted the timing belt by rotating the crank several times counter clockwise, checked to see if the the crank and cam were TDC each revolution (which they were), and tightened up the tensioner. The belt is hot to touch after driving it around to get it to normal operating temperature. I'm not sure if that's normal or not. The tension between the cam gear and water pump is pretty tight while the tension between the cam gear and crank sprocket has some deflection.

i did it today and reading from my manual the procedure was as follows.
1 get belt on aligned properly with tension on the radiator side of belt.
2 turn belt counterclockwise three cam gear teeth.
3 tourque tensioner pulley to 33lbs.
4 turn motor twice counterclockwise and make sure it maintains alignment.

Good, that's about where you want it. It seems your problem lies elsewhere.

did you put the little spacer on between the timing belt and the timing cover? mine made that noise like the timing belt was rubbing on the cover when i forgot it, and it wore the **** out of the side of my timing belt - check that

hope u don't ming me asking a question to bauley regarding slak ......if there is no slap or very little in the head light side ....would that cause the timign belt to start wearing off from the inside...meaning rubbing on the water pump....?

Apexrift: I installed both the timing belt shim/retainer things.
drevinder: If the timing belt is on too tight and there isn't any slack at all, then it will start wearing down the bearings on your water pump, tensioner, cam, crank, etc. It would also wear down the teeth on your timing belt one one side as well.
I know it the noise is coming within the timing belt area since the hollow area of the timing cover makes it louder/more audible.
Also I seem to be having a couple more problems. When I quickly give her gas, the car bogs and makes like a clunking noise as if it would die and then resume to normal. I also here like a clicking clunking when driving. is that pinging or knocking? Could it be because of the P06 and 87 octane gas?

Well, I'm going to bump up the gas grade since my compression ratio is roughly 10.1:1 and hopefully that's fix the knocking and bogging I'm getting.
Is it normal that the car shakes more?
Any leads to the "whurring" noise I'm getting?

poured 91 octane and it got rid of the knocking.
still wondering why my car shakes more than it did before the conversion.
Why does it bog when I quick give her gas?
I guess I'm going o live up with the whurring....

I'm replying to an old post here about whirring near the timing belt area. I get the same thing and replaced the timing belt and accessory belts. What could that noise be? It may just be the oil pump. ???
