Default Front axle boots and joints are bad !! What should I do ?

I sent my 94 del sol vtec dohc.....to the shop for timing belt and cam seals to be replaced, and valve adjustment.

He told me that my axle boots, passenger side was bust, and the driver side boot is cracked.

He wants to replace boot on driver ; and boot and joint on passenger for 400 dollars....

I dont have 400 more dollars.....will this be okay to drive like this ?

just buy new axles if you go to auto zone they have a lifetime warrenty so the next time the boot breaks you get a new one free. axles are easy to replace dont pay $400 thats way too much for a 30 min job that is if you know what your doing.

If he is trying to rip you for $400 to replace CV boots, how do you know that he even did that work to your car (valve adjustment, seal replacement, etc...)?

$75 per axle at AutoZone w/ lifetime warranty. Break or damage one, get another, free.

He did the Timing Belt
Cam Seals
Valve Adj.
New Accessory belts
New water pump
New Power Steering bellow
Vtec Seals and Gasket
..... and inspected car for anyother trouble.

Total is like round 600 bucks , parts and labor.
Plus he wanted.....

200- new brakes front and back
400- front axle joints and boots

but I told him to hold off on those.

------Any special tools involved in fixing the axle joints and boot yourself ?--?

I can guarantee that both boots will be hosed by the time you get the car back.

He's just a mechanic trying to make a few bucks be glad he pointed this out to you. Jobber cost is probably $125 for good axles and then figure he's got to pull the passenger side axle and replace it. He's already got the driver side in hand so that's a no-brainer. R&R on the passenger side is probably an 1.5 hr job. ..unless he screws up a boot on a ball-joint or two...

If you have the knowledge and tools, why did you take a simple timing belt to the shop in the first place? Understand where your limits are, look around at the different threads here with peeples trying to figure out how change axles using a $25 socket-set.

i changed a boot on my car. all you need is an impact wrench, a 32mm socket, a jack, and regular tools.
buy some autozone rebuilt axles, they are about 65 bux after returning the cores.
cruise over to socal and i'll do it for 60 bux jk. there is a write-up for changing axles here on HT. do it yourself man, its easy

Its easiest just to do it yourself, but 400 bux is really not that bad, the guy sounds pretty honest to me, whenever I do work on peoples cars I do it for half the lowest price that they can find, I did both axles on a camry one time and everywhere they called want 600-900 dollars!!!!!!!! And 600 is not bad for the belt work, i was looking throught the records of my car that the previous owner had kept and honda charged 950 for the same work. But DIY for like 125 and learn some more about you car at the same time

Definetly do this one yourself. The first time I did it, it took me about 2 hours. Second time I did it on a friends car, it took maybe 45 minutes. The hardest part for me (as it usually is for most people) was loosing the axel nut. I used a breaker bar and a big *** pull for that. Anyway, here is the link that helped me out tremendously
