what is the difference between i-vtec and vtec. all i know is that the ivtec kicks in lower and redlines lower..

Also i-VTEC can be tuned to change the timing with each rpm.

Also i-VTEC is only on newer motors, and not B series.

 

i knew that much, the RSX's and **** have i-vtec, although never seen a new honda under 99 with an i-vtec motor..

 

i thought the i-vtec was always engaged, just didnt fully engage until like 4k rpm, but i dont know much about the newer honda engines

there are ek civics out there with a k20 i-vtec motor in them, but they didnt come like that from the factory.... i-vtec comes only in the new Si's and both RSX and RSX-S...I could be wrong, Im not sure if the s2k's with and f22 have i-vtec

Think of it as a combination of sohc vtec and dohc vtec.You get race spec cam lobage complimented by stock cam gears advancing! did i confuse you?

i know this is a really stupid question.. but i don't know whether to buy a complete swap, or buy the block, and the rest serperately... but altogether.. what do i NEED in order to have a nice complete swap.. LIST EVERYTHING!!

i would buy the complete swap unless for some reason you could peice together a full swap for less.

Unlike VTEC operation VTC operates continuously throughout all engine speeds and throttle positions. The intake cam can be advanced by as much as 50 degrees. Advancing the cam at part throttle generates an EGR effect where some exhaust gas enters the intake. Oil pressure fed to either side of the lobes in cam advance mechanism allows the ECU to continuously advance or retard the cam to meet either emissions or power requirements. maybe i could be wrong, but i think i read somewhere that i-VTEC engages whenever you floor the gas pedal, on the new si's and rsx's,


as to VTEC only engages like after 4,600 rpm depends on what motor.

Check out 3-stage VTEC on the second link. Basically it works like VTEC-E at low RPM's, then the B / D series VTEC that we're familiar with at high RPMs. Search around a bit, then come back if you still have questions.

 

is the VTC you are talking about the same VTC that nissan uses?

I know on my 92 Maxima SE, it has the notorious "VTC ticking" problem
