I heard BMW's variable timing is supposed to be pretty nice

Do a search on google on how VTEC works.

many other companies do have it but its not so heavly advertised as a selling point or performance oriented. to name just few in the list(look below). none tend to be as efficient or as high reving as honda.
nissan has VVL
BMW has VANOS
Toyota VVTi
Porsche VARIOCAM
Mazda S-VT
Ford VCT
Mercedes VCT

i know other companies have variable valve timing, but why are honda motors the only ones that are so loud!!! when u put intake systems on them but others u put intakes on them and they arent loud at all. like celeica gts's and is300's both my friends have intakes on them and my type 4 b18c owns them at 8000 rpms i completely drown the cars out even their exhausts. lol

VVT-I
v-variable
v-valve
t-timing with
i-intelligence

this is a toyota acronym. basically it is, oh and i forgot the l.
vvtl-i
the l is lift. basically it is the same as the v tec on the honda but, you are actually adjusting the valve overlap on the intake cam. in relation to the exh cam. up to 50 degrees either way. instead of just using another set of cam lobes. this is where you get the best of both worlds. good low end, with good top end. you used to have to have one or the other. this system is not unlike the nissan system.

basically it is this. not to be smart either.....look at the v tec lobe. thats one hell of a lift. with the cam being the brain of a car, when you change it that drastically, it will yell. toyota's dont yell like that because they are adjusting the overlap and lobe separation. comparing apples to oranges. honda adjusts lift, while others adjust the initial timming.

A breakdown of Honda vs. Toyota technologies:

* Honda:

VTEC = changes cam profiles at a single set point in the rev range to increase valve duration and lift at high RPM

VTC = increases valve overlap continuously along the entire rev range

i-VTEC = VTEC + VTC

* Toyota:

VVT-i = increases valve overlap continuously along the entire rev range

VVTL-i = increases valve overlap continuously along the entire rev range + changes cam profiles at a single set point in the rev range to increase valve duration and lift at high RPM

* Therefore:

VTC = VVT-i

VTEC = VVTL-i - VVT-i

VVTL-i = i-VTEC

* Technology line:

VVT-i & VTC < VTEC < VVTL-i & i-VTEC
