v-tec changes cam lobes, wile ivtec changes cam lobes AND timing.

ivtec is like a mix between v-tec and vvti.

correct me if i'm wrong cuz i'm not 100% sure

i believe that the difference is the i-vtec engines have vct(variable cam timing) the ecu controls the intake cams timing.

basically what the people have stated up there and i-vtec is basically the whole hybrid deal that the new cars such as the rsx-s and tsx and what not have as an engine. It is the "Intelligent Vtec" You can do some searching on here too.

your sir are wrong ...also honda didnt create "vtec" (i was told it was bmw and ive heard it was ferrari...so im not sure) also vvti doesnt have lift it has vct, vvti-l has lift/vct, bascially i-vtec.if anything honda copied toyota about putting vct in thier engines, if we want to talk about companies bitting.

i-vtec incorporates timing into variable lift. Its what gives the new si 197 bhp. Honda will be reducing up to 30% of friction across the motor using the i-vtec setup. IMO i-vtec seems to have incredible potential.

yup i believe the some of the reduction is due to the roller rocker set-up

Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control came out in 1988 in the JDM CRX SiR. Also in 1988 honda Dominated Formula 1 with 15 out of 16 victories. The first car in the United states with vtec was the NSX 1990-1991.

I also found this after doing some searching. Thought you might find it intresting.

Honda's VTEC motors get even smarter

June 18, 2003

TOKYO – Honda has introduced a three-litre V6 motor with the latest iteration of its i-VTEC technology, called "variable cylinder management", that allows three cylinders to freewheel when the car is cruising or little engine power is required.

All six, of course, blast into action when more power or overtaking acceleration are required.

Honda says the engine combines the effortless performance of a three-litre V6 while offering superior fuel economy of 8.6 litres/100km – a figure more likely to be expected from a 2.4-litre, four-cylinder motor.

The engine will be installed in the Honda Inspire that is scheduled for launch in Japan tomorrow (June 19)

.

The motor also significantly reduces exhaust emissions, helping the Inspire meet Japan's governmental requirements for ultra-low emissions and 2010 fuel consumption standards, making it eligible for preferential "Green Tax" treatment.

The new engine achieves this by combining high-density catalytic converters located directly below each cylinder head for better exhaust gas processing at low engine temperatures with exceptionally fine air/fuel ratio control.

The adoption of a variable intake system, over-sized intake valves and low back-pressure catalytic converters has, Honda says, further improved engine respiration to give maximum power output of 184kW and torque of 296Nm.

The cylinder management system analyses throttle opening, vehicle speed, engine speed and gear choice to determine that the car is cruising then idles the intake and exhaust valves of the three cylinders in the rear cylinder bank.

With zero valve lift, the cylinders are sealed and no fuel is injected. Pumping losses are thus reduced by as much as 65% and low fuel consumption is realised.

When operating in three-cylinder mode, engine vibration is reduced by extrapolating vibration from the change in crankshaft rotation speed and sending the information to an "active control" engine mounting that compresses/extends an actuator in same-phase, same-period motion to dampen the movement.

Similarly, a speaker creates an opposite phase sound for a quieter interior. The driver, Honda says, will be left unaware of changes in cylinder activation.
