Default vtec not working

Ok, i checked out 94 civic ex today but the vtec does not engage. The owner said its because it doesn't have the speedometer. So my question is can this be true? Also what else could it be? what should I check?

I think he is full of ****. Why would it not work because of the cluster? ANyhow maybe the solenoid is bad, or it has a bad connection.

how do u know vtec isnt working? are u inside the engine and looking at it? the owner must be a ******* idiot, wtf does a speedo have to do with vtec? hook up a wire to the solinoid and hook that up to a light, go drive and hit vtec, if the light comes on then its fine. i used a volt meter and the light to see if mine was working.

I will try that and see what happens. I am supposed to trade my car for it, I have a 97 dx. Even if the vtec doesn't work do u think i should still trade him?

in a single cam its not like dohc vtec. you dont hear it the same and if your speedo doesnt work on the motors vtec wont ingauge .. like type r runs vtec off speed sensor.. it could be a million reasons why it wont hit.. low oil . bad wiring bad vtec pressure switch.. clogged pressure switch screen inside the selinoid.. just to name a few

dosent the car have to be going faster then 20mph for vtec to engage.... and if the VSS isnt working then could this be the reason why vtec isnt engaging?
