Default Misfiring, Clogged Cat, or what?

I have a '90 CRX HF. I changed the oil about 2 weeks ago (Royal Purple 5w-30 w/ a Pureone Filter).
The next day, I noticed bogging while accelerating and cruising.

It seems to happen especially when the engine warms up.
It feels like the clutch is skipping almost...the engine seems to pulse with power...I don't know if this could be due to a clogged cat.

So I searched up a storm:
I have new spark plug wires, spark plugs, Distributor cap and rotor, Igniter, ignition coil, new air filter, and a new PCV valve.

So, Now I'm out of ideas.

I think it's a distributor/electrical issue, as changing the igniter and cap/rotor yielded a significant decrease in this lag.

But alas, I am out of ideas...could my timing be off? But I would think this would cause issues all of the time.

I don't know, I'm out of ideas...

I think that's your problem, if you have NONE of these how is your car running, on mice?

P.S. If you think it's your cat, how is your gas mileage?

When my cat got clogged, my performance sucked, gas mileage sucked a bigger one, and I can hear it.

I would try and amke sure the firing order on the distributor checks out...and if the gas mileage is sucking...i noticed you didn't replace the fuel filter...You'd be amazed at what it does to the Hf dude....I was getting like 33mpg like you..and i changed it...and bam went back up to my normal 49....<--gotta love the Hf L3 gearing

SO that's my guess....try replacing the fuel filter for better Gas mileage
as for boggin...check dizzyand firing order....

good luck

I think I had the same problem, but this happen when I was driving. I notice something was wrong when I came to a complete stop (RPM was moving up and down near the1500 without pressing the gas and making a wear noise near the engine) then I heard all these popping sounds from underneath my seats where the exhaust was located. When I try to accelerate, the MAX speed was about 20mph. I was scared so I park the REX at the sidewalk to check the problem but the only thing I found negative was that my air intake was unattached but nothing else was wrong. My final suggestion was to rev the REX around 6000 RPM three or four times then everything went fine. I thought my cat was clogged so I took it off then clean it up when I got home but nothing seems wrong.

I can’t check my gas mileage because my gas meter is busted. It fills up when its full but when I drive like 100 miles, it’s empty. I filled the gas when it was at empty but it only took like three gallons so something is wrong with that.

Crap, cause I forgot to list that among my new parts...I changed that back in January...unless I got a nasty tank of gas recently...

Well, I tried unplugging the O2 sensor.
It seemed to help, at first.
On the way home from work, same **** again.
It feels like it's pulsing...
Otherwise, I am having similar problems to the aforementioned post...

it might be the cat and the dist. when my dist. went out it bogged and sputtered and eventually from the misfiring, all of the unburned fuel goes into the cat and gets burned up there, melting the catalyst. are you smelling fuel?

what we did when my cat clogged up was drop the exhaust right at the cat and the hangers the rest of the way back so you take the whole cat back out. take a broom handle and stick it up in the cat end and break it all up then turn it upside down and shake it all out. gotta get all or it will rattle. then get a good cat on there quickly so you don't pollute too much. mine was literally leaving black soot on the back of my car and the wall where i park at work.

Math lesson for the day

1. fill up your tank, till the pump shuts off
2. before leaving station reset you trip
3. drive until you feel you need gas
4. fill tank the same way you did before
5. record the gallons pumped as well as the miles on your trip.

take the miles on your trip and divide by the number of gallons.

mpg= distance traveled/gallons used

I understand what you mean but I only fill up my tank twice after owning my REX.

That's what I was kind of thinking; My cat may have gone due to an issue w/ unburned hydrocarbons entering the exhaust.

ANd I actually keep thinking I smell Gas...but I always assumed that was from another car, etc, as I only smell gas once in awhile...
Would that be unburned fuel in the exhaust?
I'm smelling this in the cabin, with the blower on, so I'd assume the smell is eminating from the engine area.

Also, My muffler fell off a bit ago, think that would cause any issues?
Up until this problem, the missing muffler made the car feel a little better, from the lack of all that backpressure...

Alright first lets get some things straight....your relating to much to together...

first off you changed your oil? and THEN the problem started happening...?? and now you think your cat is clogged tell me why you think this?

Honestly rarely will your dist. and cat all of sudden **** up and now your car runs like ****.....ill be right out an honest with you first off how much oil did you put in the car? maybe you posted it already and I missed that.....if you overfilled it it will cause a serious lag in power....

Anyways you had this problem.......after changing the oil so THEN you did all the maitenence? like tune-up and the likes?

Well then checking your firing order would be pointless(although Id do it anyways) because if it did it before then you can kinda assume its nothing you did.....

Explain your steps from the oil change to now what all you did and your cars progression and I we could prob. be of more assistance.

nevermind- you said you smelled gas, which is common wiht an old car, chances are over time your cat HAS been getting clogged

does the smell ever smell like rotten eggs/sulfar?

I've never noticed any sulfuric smell...

My other concern is that I'm fairly sure I have two cats, one at the front of the system (it heats quickly, causing the cat to actually work quickly), and then I have another further down the pipe...

Since the Helm's does not entail Exhaust things, Does anyone have any advice for checking a cat?
I figure I'll just unbolt the heat shield, etc, and then look inside...
Is there a better/easier/more effective way to check?
