I just recently purchased a 98 Civic with 80k miles, and there is a noise when the clutch is engaged, and when decelerating through the gears. It kinda sounds like the transmission is whining. Anyway I called a Honda repair shop and he said that from the symptoms I was describing that it is probably the "input shaft bearing" in the transmission. He also advised to replace the clutch at the same time, since we would have the tranny apart. Anyway, he told me that it would be about $450 for the "input shaft bearing" and another $165 for the clutch, parts and labor.

I was just wondering if this sounds about right with the price and the diagnosis. Also, what would happen if I never changed the input shaft bearing? Would it just get louder? Or would it damage more costly things? I don't really have 600 bux that I can just throw down the drain right now so how much would it hurt it to keep driving it for another year or so?

hey man I have the same problem right now. I just ordered a ex tranny from this site called d-a-p.com it cost me 300+ 74 shipping and I got a stage 1 clutch form over night autoparts.com it was real cheap. try that just replace the whole tranny. it is worth the money. trust me I just bought it tonight.

 

damn i thought i was the only one who had that problem but yea basically its the right diagnostics and ive been driving my car with the whinning noise for about 3 years now with out a prob. maybe i should knock on wood just incase it does **** up....

 

yes it could damage quite costly things, the $ quote sounds about right. It is not too hard to replace the bearing yourself, if you can afford the downtime, the worst you can do is have buy another transmission. You would have 50$ in a bearing and seal if you do it yourself.

 

I went to http://www.d-a-p.com/ and man do they have some inexpensive parts!!!! 300 bux for a EX tranny with under a 100k miles. They also had EX trannys with under 60k, and 80k miles, for $600 and $500 respectively. I will more than likey do business with them in the near future. As for buying another tranny, I probably won't do. But hell, if something happens to my current tranny, I'm calling DAP up pronto!

What is the difference between and EX, DX, and CX trannys? There is no cost difference on DAP.

When I fix my input shaft bearing should I fix the pilot bearing as well??

 

maybe its just your throwout bearing.

 

My civic is going to go in the shop on Feb 2, and be there for 3 days. I will let you guys know the verdict when I get it back at the end of next week.
