Default yeah, i'm a newbie, with a noob 90 civic std ecu/engine Q

ok, so i'm considering buying a 90 civic hatch. it's the base hatch 4-speed, but i was under the impression they had the 8 valve engines D15B1? the one in it is a 16 valve. am i just wrong, or have years mixed up, or was it swapped? if it was swapped, would it had to have had the ecu switched to run at all, or could it run but possibly rich or something if the ecu wasn't changed? the car smokes a bit, seems kinda blackish. it comes with yet another engine cuz he said it was burning oil, but the smoke seems more black than blue to me. but...he's the owner so he knows more than me.

anyway, i just thought i'd check. i'm rather new to hondas...i had an 87 crx si for about a month, and then sold it to my dad. aside from that i'm a full toyota kid. flame me if you wish i've had 3 celicas (my current is an alltrac...for those of you who know what it is) and one corolla gt-s(AE86, which i'm guessing almost all of you know what it is)

anyway, thanks for any info...i did do a search, but didn't see much helpful...i prolly did a bad job searching tho. my general knowledge would say that the ecu would definately need swapped for a change as major as an additional cam, but just thought i'd check to make sure...never know with those honda's

welcome to H-T..
Only the 88-91 crx HF has a 8 valve motor..
All hatches have 16 valve motors.
STD=70hp 1.5l 4spd dpfi
DX=90hp 1.5l 5spd/auto dpfi
SI=105/108hp 1.6 5spd mpfi

the CRX HF is the 8 valve guy a.k.a the D15B6, supporting a whopping 60hp, MPFI. Made especially for spectacular gas milage. Although you can typically accellerate faster on a 10spd huffy... it gets upwards of 50MPG... more than some of today's "hybrid" cars. Shows how far we've come, doy. (For Example the Honda Insight only gets 57MPG. HAHA, tool)

Your car, however, has a D15B2 with DPFI... still no GT-S, but a much more powerful engine then it's 8 valve brother.

*edit: doh, beat me to it

EDIT wow too slow!!

first off only the HF models had the 8 valve. if its a STD 4 speed it would be a d15b1 16 valve.

your on the right track when you mention the cam, its the part of that engine that is very restrictive. that and the cat is 4 inches from the block, which sucks. no real headers.

also its DPFI which means only 2 injectors, not 4. any swap into that car requires you to wire the extra injectors and the distributor.

theres lots you could do with the car. but have a mechanic check it out before you buy it, smoke of any kind cant be explained away by saying "hes the owner, he must know" bc people lie.

4cyl have one header

8cyl have two headerS

The cat is 4 inches away from the block. Not a real header. I'm just pissy about MrSpeaker being a faster typer.

Same stupid thing as RPMs... it's not RPMs, it's RPM. Revolutions Per Minutes. Eat Me, I'm going to sleep.

don't get me wrong, i'm not really looking for performance on this. it's going to be more of a commuter, but one that handles well, because that's what i have to have from any car.

also, the guy is a friend of mine, and he's made it as clear as possible that the engine is not in great shape. i am hoping it will make it till spring, at which point i can swap the engine for the replacement which is the same engine as is in it. not a multi-point injection. and actually, i can tell when things are amis with a car, and usually pick out the problems. i've done a few headgasket jobs, and a couple engine swaps, and quite a bit of routine maintenance. i know the ecu question i had prolly made me sound a bit stupid, but i knew the std engine wasn't multi point injection and this one wasn't. just thought i'd seen somewhere that they were single cam engines. so i thought perhaps there was a dual cam engine that was nearly identical in every other way, and perhaps the person that owned it before him had swapped it. but...you've answered that question! thanks! i'm guessing the initial black smoke when he started it was due to the fact that it was sitting (he was going to swap the new engine, but then had no time as he went back to his old job at a dealership and had no more time for it) and things getting shook up in the exhaust when he started removing things for the swap. (i know in my alltrac it put out some black for a minute when i had been wrenching on my old exhaust to change it out) so that's probably the explanation of that.

body is in good shape, very little rust at all, good interior, tokico springs and inserts, and some strut tower braces. red...just like all the others. haha.

anyway, thanks again for the info
