gsr no vtec?
check the code and you'll find out.
jump the blue connector above the ecu and count the number of blinks. long blinks = 10, short blinks = 1. ex. - long long short = 21, long short short = 12.

my gsr that i bought a few days ago is doing the exact same thing, redlines at 6800 rpm when the check engine lights goes on and i can't seem to hear vtec. But when teh check engine is off, it redlines at 8200 but still can't hear vtec or hear when the secondary valves kick in

i'm not sure if you caught what this guy was saying but some check engine codes stop VTEC from happening...

Maybe he doesnt have a gsr motor? Ive seen stolen Gsr's that people buy thinking theyre actual ones, and a key way to notice besides the redline limit is that check engine light
(from personal experience of course)

you prob don't have vtec and 8k because you don't have a P72 ecu. if you redline at 6800 (coincidentally, the LS redlines at 6800, revlimits at like 7000 or 7200 or whatever), and vtec doesn't engage, thats probably your problem.
see if your ecu says P75 on it. if it does, thats it.

if ur talking about the 6800 rpm redline, my car is a gsr cuz it does say p72 and it does redline at 8200 when and only if the check engine light is not on, onces the check engine light is on, then the rev limiter kicks in at 6800. I also check the engine oil, and it has the rite amount. Also my gsr has a AEM CAI intake so i know for sure i should hear the vtec and the secondary valve when it engages.
the 6800 redline is because your check engine light is on. When the CEL is on, VTEC won't activate, so the ECU lowers the redline. If your oil is good then you've got to check the code to see why the lights on and go from there. You may not necessarily hear the VTEC engagement at 4500 rpm (WOT) regardless of your intake set up, but the butterflies at 5700 (WOT) are usually audible. DIAGNOSE YOUR CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. With the light on= no VTEC & no butterflies & 6800 redline. Good luck!
