What the hell is up with my gas mileage???
I have a 98 ex auto coupe with no engine mods but CAI and muffler...I get about 18mpg and the silencer is in...does this have anything to do with it?
Could it be the spark plugs?
I plan on checking the flint on them and checking my fluids....let me know guys, this really sucks having a camaro and chevy trucks get better gas mileage than me...

it could be your 02 sensor goin bad but if it goes bad your chechengine light will come on but then agin it might not so you might check it out. take your car down to Auto Zone and let them run a test on your car and see whats goin on.
Don't think its your CAI cause i have one plus header and full cat. back and i got 38 mpg on a road trip a few weeks ago. hope you figure it out good luck

How many miles on it ? My 97 Auto-Ex 78k miles does about the same (18 mpg) in town. On the freeway it's upper 20's per gallon. I have replaced the plugs, distributor cap and rotor etc. My trans seems to shift smoothly etc. ....flushed the fluid. My to-do list now is adjust the valves, change the Oxygen sensor and PCV to hopefully get a couple more mpg. Other than that we love the car

What do you rev it do? When your crusing what gear do you keep it in? Do you drive like my friend @ 4k all day long... (BTW he spun a bearing)
How many miles to a tank do you usually get before you have to fill up? I've never figured mine out miles to gallon but I usually have to fill up around 280-290 in the city. 95 auto ex coupe.
I bought my 94 5 spd EX Coupe last Dec. I put all my gas mileage numbers in a spread sheet a couple weeks ago and calculated it out by the month. I'd driven 15,600 miles. The mpg sagged badly in cold weather from a low of 30 mpg last Jan to a high of almost 38 mpg during Jun, July and Aug. If your mpg dropped just recently it might be because of the cold weather. The automatic choke stays on a long time, so if you are doing many short around town trips it could explain the bad mpg.
Car is in the sig but I get almost 30 MPG with mostly City driving. Looking for the 30+ that it should be capable of..... must be highway

Unless he's purposely keeping the car in D2, or D3, I think the auto tranny will select the gear that's right for the speed/RPM of the car

so it an AUTO...
maybe it could be that you feel your auto is not going anywhere when you push the pedal to the metal and you then stump too hard on the gas pedal to have your car move. This will cause you to have bad gas mileage

even when I felt like pushing my auto 2000 EX as hard as its puny heart could go, I never went below 25mpg.. and that was all city and almost.. always hitting the gas hard just to see what would happen... btw, did that at 65000 miles, its at 78000 now, still getting 30-38 depending on city or highway... I also have a K&N filter..
1. check tyre pressure
2. check spark plugs
3. read the fault codes via shorting the diagnostic pin
4. Lambda/O2 sensor
5. if all the above is fine, get the emissions checked as it will be running rich. & then check valve clearance
let us know how you get on with all that. I'd suspect the O2 sensor but you didn't say if the CEL was on at any point ?
