Default SOS Anyone knowledgeable with automatic trans ?

In a nutshell....Myself and others in this forum have 6th Gen EX's with automatics that suck gas - in town driving......aprox 18mpg. Mine does okay on the highway....upper 20's. It idles, runs and shifts smoothly, plugs burn clean etc. but sucks.
One member mentioned he owns two auto EX's. The car with a rebuilt trans gets good milage but does not shift as smoothly as the car with original gas sucker trans. Is it worth it to replace the trans. linear solenoid which I understand controls shifting ( easy DIY $150) or have a transmission shop run diagnostics etc. and expect the worst - rebuild ?
Thanks

driving styles are going to affect your gas mileage during city driving. this is how car manufacturers determine city gas mileage. CITY TEST- this test simulates a 7.5 mile stop and go trip, with a speed range of 0 to 56 mph, and an average speed of 20mph. the trip takes 23 minutes and has 18 stops. eighteen percent of the trip is spent idling, such as would be expected in the city at stop lights or in rush hour traffic. two kinds of engine starts are used. one is a cold start, which is similar to starting a car after having parked all night. the other is a hot start, which is similar to starting a car after having been parked for a short period of time while stopping. the information from this test is then combined to represent the fuel economy of that vehicle during a realistic mixture of hot and cold starts during urban driving conditions. in 1985 they decided to reduce the final # by 10% in an attempt to get more realistic figures.

rebuilding automatics isnt cheap. itd ACTUALLY probably be cheaper to convert to manual, rather than rebuild the auto. just a thought.
itd be easier too.

ditto, that's what I'm going to do, but for right now, I'd advise you just buy the part and replace it yourself, if you want something done right....

the point is there probably isnt anything wrong with your transmission. you are probably just driving it hard and wondering why you arent getting 30mpg in the city. for all we know you could be pushing some 19's, rocking a bigass wing, have improper tire pressure, mad toe problems and like to pretend that your auto is a manual.
