I did a test this past few weeks on what my car actually gets mpg. Ist off its a 97 ex 5speed with about 106k on the clock. Also its stock D series with a intake and header. oh yea 17's if that matters

Shitty gas 87 (Sam's club gas)

Reving the **** out of it = 25mpg
driving like normal people do = 28mpg


Good gas 93? I forget (Sam's club gas)

Reving the **** out of it =26
driving normal = 30

So is filling up on better gas worth it for mpg and value. My answer is yes, if you figure, its getting a total of 20 more miles out of the 10gallons it usually takes to fill the car up and prices per gallon usually vary from about .20. So if you times the .20 X the 10 gallons it takes to fill the car its only 2.00 so in fact you are getting the same thing,l buy buying the high grade gas but its better for your car. Has anyone done a similar comparsion? Results?

Well there's other variables since it wasn't a controlled test. I can't say either way if higher octane helps mpg or not. I'd like to see how the numbers would compare if you ran the test again.

 

If you search there are probably a lot of threads about gas milage. I know there was one not too long ago about different octanes. Did you just drive on one tank with each kind of gas? Probably the best way to test it is to drive on several tank fulls with each kind of gas and different driving styles and take an average of each type.

But even with your results, it's only a couple of miles difference. And if your car doesn't require premium, or you not boosting then regular gas is fine.

Nope sorry.

octane is a measure of how hard fuel is to combust, the higher the octane the harder your engine has to work to ignite it and make power from it. a honda civic (near stock) does absolutley not need anything higher than 89. hell even 89 isnt necessary. they are designed to run on the bare minumum of octane because they are economy engines. you are causing more harm than good running a higher than reccomended octane in that engine. carbon deposits are bad.

you want better fuel go to mobil 1, exxon, 76, etc. not this sams club/costco ****. they reason their gas is so cheap is because they buy the gas that has sometimes been mixed with the water that seperates the different companies gas in the pipelines.

 

I just got 31.7 mpg on my turbo civic over the weekend! Can't beat that with 175whp on tap!

 

Well im doing it again right now, but compared to others Im getting **** milage. I did do a tune up a few weeks ago so I dont think that will help me if I switch up stuff.

 

My civic when it was boosted ate gas like a truck. Or maybe it was just the way that I drove.

 

car aint tuned right now i'll be lucky to get over 24mpg

You're throwing money out the window buying more expensive gas, the only way that you could possibly benefit from premium is seriously advance the timing, your test just isn't a good one, too many variables.

Maybe it's where you drive, but your mpg sux, I get 33with my b16 and a rather heavy Del Sol.

 

See I have a lead foot and drive like 60 around town and about 90 highway. Mostly flat I live in AZ and its cold out now and I dont know if that has any effect on the mpg. I know it isnt a documented test its just one I did trying to figure out exactly what I was getting. What model of civic is the good gas one? Is it the hx or dx? My g/f wants to buy one but she isnt sure due tot the fact she does do alot of highway driving.

and yes cold weather affects mileage, espically here. colder air = more dense.

I didnt even notice you were in az, lol. Yea Im going to let her know about the hx then and see what we can find. Where you around the avondale area either early today or yesterday? I just looked at your car and it looks like one I seen this moring

Hah, my timing is all fucked up since a long time ago. Even under normal driving, I get 220-250 per tank, city and highway combined. Bone stock D15B7. I DEFINITELY need to remove my timing belt and check that everything is on TDC and my timing belt hasn't skipped a tooth, then, set my timing to OEM spec. Just need someone who has an air compressor and a strong impact gun to let me borrow it.

 

So do you guys think mine isnt that bad?

I am in avondale every morning but not with my 240, i see that red one too on my way to school, its a base model 97/8.

 

It's not. I wish I can at least get mine to 30 MPG.

get on I-10 drive twords tucson, im at the end of phoenix. Chandler, Ray, Warner, etc.

 

I get 34-39 mpg a tank, varies w/ how much of my time I spend on the highway with that tank of gas. Stock d16y8 w/ AEM short ram in a 98 sedan.

Oh, and 50k on the engine/trans/body.

 

Anyone else?

Don't need airtools man, just throw the thing in 5th gear, and have a buddy stomp on the brakes, combine that with a big freakin breaker bar and it's no sweat.
