Default Can I swap a dx tranny onto an HX civic

My friend has a 97 Civic HX, and the tranny is being a piece of crap. I told him to swap on a DX tranny, but his mechanic says it wont fit. Supposedly, it has to do with the starter or some thing.

I was under the impression that a d-series block will mount to any d series tranny? My friend also happens to have a 99 dx tranny on the side of his house, but supposedly it wont work. They are both auto trannies by the way.

If its a manual, yes. If its auto, you need the CVT HX trans.

ah AUTO HX. yeah thats going to be the CVT transmission. technically I was right in that any of them would bolt up but the trannys are different and likely would not work with the HX ecu.

If the HX is automatic you can't use the DX auto tranny, the ECU cannot control the regular automatic tranny since the original one is CVT, it has no "gears" to shift up & down.

so, if i get a dx auto ecu, and use the dx tranny, it should work. is there any sort of additional modifications?

engine mounts? wire harness? anything needs changing?

You have an auto HX?

You need the HX auto trans. You can't get around it unless you want to swap out the ENTIRE MOTOR.

If you did that your VTEC would no longer work (meaning you would permanently have only one operational intake valve) and idle air valve would not operate either. Put a Y8 head on there with that tranny and get a Y8 auto harness and ecu. Better yet convert to a manual.

No. If you wanted to waste a lot of time and money (which it sounds like you want to), you'll have to get a 96-98 Civic EX head, ECU, and auto tranny to get it to work. And then you'd have to wire up a knock sensor so the ECU could read it. You COULD do the same thing with DX stuff. Personally i'd just try to find another CVT tranny or take the whole motor out and do a swap.

another CVT tranny is $$$$$$. they guy my boy bought the car from spent $2500 on a fucked up one. and now, my boy cant find one except for at Honda which is in the $3000 range.

my boy has a 99 dx tranny on the side of his house. our other friend has 3 z6 heads. why can't we use an auto p28 to make this work?

It's not that the auto P28 and Z6 head is a bad idea, but I don't think your wiring is correct for a different kind of tranny. Plus you'd need an OBD1 conversion harness and I don't know of any conversion harnesses that have provision for automatic trannies built in them.
