Default 99 Civic HX with bad auto transmission - What are compatible replacements?

I bought a 1999 Civic HX with a bad auto tranny. A friend had a 98 DX, and I was told that the trans were the same. After removing the DX tranny, I found it was different than the HX tranny. The shift cables are in different locations, the dipsticks are different (DX tranny dipstick is in the back, HX is in the front). Upon finding this out I ordered a 90k mile tranny from a recycled auto parts yard. When I received it, it's the same as the DX one. What transmission do I need here, and why are they different since they are both EKs? Can I only use an HX trans? Need help, and quick. Thanks for your help.

HX trannys are different from DXs. Get the one for your car.

Anyone have a part number on the HX tranny? The sticker on mine is gone

Anyone? Every yard I can get stuff from wants north of a grand for this tranny. At this point what options do I have? Can I use the shift cable from the DX? I have a DX parts car at my disposal. What are the differences in sensors/harness from the DX to the HX? Is there a motor swap I can do for cheaper than a grand? Really need help, anyone who can chime in with anything even close to useful info would be greatly appreciated... I'm a mechanic by trade, just need some Honda enthusiasts to give some opinions/advice..

It has to be another CVT HX tranny or you can swap in a manual. No other automatic will work though.

I'd go to Jasper.

I've never purchased a Honda tranny from them, but I put one of their trannys in my drag car. The engine in front of that tranny cranks out 810ft/lbs of torque and 760HP. No problems after about 300 full throttle passes down the track in a 3500lb car.

Will it be cheap? Nope.

But I'll bet you a donut it lasts until the rest of the car is trashed.

The only problem with that is I don't know of anyone that does anything with HX trannys. I don't even think level10 (pretty much the only place that specializes in building honda automatics for race applications) have don't anything with an HX tranny. Just to clarify its not like a regular honda automatic (which btw isn't even like any other automatic) its a CVT tranny, its kind of off on its own and very much forgotten as far as the aftermarket goes.

good luck finding a decent one in good shape. So far from what I've gathered is that it's one honda should've stayed away from although good on their end for all the repairs. I have both a 97 and 99 hx's but are 5 speeds. I would suggest as 94EG8 has stated and swap in a manual transmission unless there are issues where you can't drive a stick shift. For manual's you can use any 92-00 civic/del sol that came with the d series.

The hx is fairly rare itself but I think the ones that came with the 5 speed are a lot more common than those that had come with the cvt.

you can always haggle with the Honda dealer. Triple A discount will get you 10% off. I let them know I'm a college student and anything they can do to help would be appreciated. They knock off $$$ when you're sincere and aren't lying.
