help with adv. timing
Can someone help me out please. I went out and rented a timing gun today, but I ran into a problem early on. I have a 1990 integra LS and I can't find the service connector. I've looked everywhere under the dash on the passenger side and I can't find it. If someone has done this on a g2 teg, could you point me in the right direction.
Having the car warm and idling lower has nothing to do with the service connector. It is to get an accurate reading on the timing. The service connector is shorted to stop the ECU from resetting the base timing.

Hmm...I'm not actually sure where it would be in a second gen. Third gens have them up in the dash sorta where the glove box is. If you undo your glove box, you mght see it. Sorry I couldn't be much help.

Aight here's a question, me and my friend advanced our timings but the picture here
didn't match what we saw. We still saw the white 0 btdc tick mark but thats the only thing that matched. What I saw was a red tick and two non colored ticks on either side of it. So if you look at the pic the 16 btdc tick (which it was stock set) was the red tick we saw. And the 14btdc and 18btdc ticks were non colored ticks. Another friend of mine also had the same problem and he saw the same thing, except he didn't see the two ticks on either side of the red mark, which is really easy to miss unless you know to look for it. One thing that we had in common is that we used timing guns without dials, could this be the reason what we saw didn't match up with the picture. What do you guys think, my car's running good, but i wanna make sure i didn't mess anything up, thanks

yeah, that sounds just like what i saw except that the other two ticks around the red one didn't seem to be the same distance apart. Maybe I was just imagining things. I'll take another look today. I think I'm going to try to get a paper towel or something in there to clean off the area where the ticks are. Plus I still haven't found the service connector. btw, I was using a timing gun without the adjustable timing as well.
cybernutz, where was the service connector in your car? Did you jump it? I still haven't found mine and the only thing I can think of is that mine doesn't have it because i know that they switched ecu's between 91 and 92. Mine's a 90, maybe I'm making this a lot more complicated that it really is.
Here's a link on how I found mine, http://www.c-speedracing.com/faq/06.html, but as for your car, I'm not sure bro, maybe someone with a helms manual can help us out here.
I appologize for the colors used in that picture. I shouldn't have chose RED. The colors were used to distinguish that there are 3 marks... otherwise you'd just get a bunch of black lines if i didn't color them in
Sorry.
But ya... the center 'mark' is 16deg BTDC. There are 2 more marks, one on each side which corrospond to 14 and 18deg BTDC.
HTH.

yeah, so I finally tried to advance the timing today and just take a look before and after to see if it worked without the jumper, so i loosened the first two bolts on the distributor and then broke TWO sockets sets trying to loosen that last one. Yes, that's right...I said two. So I had to tighten the other two bolts with a wrench and kinda scratched them up. Im taking my car in on thursday anyway to get the brakes looked at so I'll get my mechanic to advance the timing and loosen that damn bolt. And then I guess it's off to canadian tire to replace the peices I broke.
if you dont jumer the service connector you will adjust the timing then 2 seconds later it will be off. so you adjust it again then again it will be off. ask me how i know this
How do you know this? I need to get off my *** and advance my timing. Must take advantage of 93 Octane. Hey in Cali you guys have problems with getting high octane gas?
Can't you just turn the distributor (held on with 3 bolts) "back" a few mm to advance your timing? I realize this isn't very accurate, but I was told that for each mm back would be one degree advanced. Make sense? Or is it total BS?

On your car, get down on your back in the passenger side footwell in front of the pass. seat. On the passenger side wall, there is a plastic trim panel. Look behind this panel (pull it off if you need to) and you will see the connector just hanging there.
