I have come to a point in my build where i have no idea what to do..My goal is 300-350 whp <U>DAILY DRIVEN</U> maybe even higher later on...Regardless any one of these setups will be properly tuned..But my question to the people that have had experience with daily driven turbod hondas is do i need to sleeve??? The only reason im thinking about sleeving the block is because of added safety and this will be my only car so i dont want anything bad happening to it if i can prevent it..HOwever i have talked to people and read numerous post about how stock sleeves hold up and all about the tune and blah blah blah..he turbo in mind is either the SC34 or SC44..If anyone has any input or articles i would greatly appreciate it..late

 

might as well do it right the first time . i just went turbo on my DD and sleeved it. if you want more hp later then you dont have to worry about it. go for it if you can afford it

 

Turbo car will break down, so you must have a spare car. I would go with either a slleve or no sleeve fully built, 350whp should be fine on stock sleeve.

id say if money is an issue dont sleeve it, but you will enjoy the satisfaction of knowning that you are sleeved...

 

My car is a perfectly reliable 300whp driver which is drag raced occasionally (about 100 runs so far), and gets very close to 30mpg. I also meticulously inspect and maintain my car on a strict schedule to catch any potential problems. I have no experience with 350 whp DDs...sorry no help there.

Bottom line...300 whp DD = no problem (in my opinion)

 

You can run stock block LS at 300-350 no problem if you are very in tune with your car (good mechanic, etc), if you don't mind a lot of preventative maintainence and spot checks, if you have the equipment/knowledge to make sure your tune is spot on every so often. If you're talking 225-250 with 300-350 as your occaisional high boost setting, I have less reservations.

Around that area, sleeves start getting iffy, you may want to go built for the sense of assurance. I have more respect for factory rods than anyone else on this forum; in my experience they don't fold unless you have an oilling problem or are detonating severely... detonating to the point stock ringlands have already started cracking. If you get carried away and flog on your cars in the heat of the moment, a built engine may be for you.

The way I look at it, a replacement LS is $400-500 and will hold 300-350 for a good bit. Since my turbo car is no longer my daily driver (it was for a year and a half), it makes more sense to me to swap out an engine every 8000-12000 miles because I'm pushing some limits than it does to drop a couple grand building one engine "correctly."

Keep in mind that a turbo Honda, built or not, as a daily driver is a huge maintainence *****... it's cheaper to run a daily beater, and you'll enjoy your fast car more if you don't ruin it with the boring mundane daily drive. Everyone I know locally with a fast car has a cheesy beater - John Lunsford, 460whp/490 wtq Supra drives an 89 Festiva daily; Scott with the *built* 2JZ powered 81 Corolla (so little underhood space the radiator is in the trunk) drives an 80 Tercel rustbox daily; Walter's blown 65 Mustang has a shitty Ford Ranger or somesuch; Jake's 497 whp 03 Cobra - hits low 700's on spray, forget the figure, is left parked for an old Toyota on his daily drive; I have an Uberdata tuned D15B7 in my 89 DX that nets 40 mpg highway, and a shitty turbo CRX up on jackstands

Regardless of the topic you decided for this thread, I saw "daily driver" and decided what the topic of this thread needs to be. Some people have great luck daily driving a turbo Honda... you feeling lucky?

 

if u have the money sleeve it. its extra peice of mind... but if you dont there has been numerous cars to do what you want with stock sleeves...

Thats what i did when I had my R. got a 240sx for a couple hundred for a beater. Best decision i ever made. No more borrowing cars.
And yes, i dont care what anyone says. stuff will break. Dont be caught off gaurd.
