Default b18 or b20 (i know its been answered!)

ok, ok i know its been answered a hundred times here before... but before you all jump and yell at me to search, read it through.

ok, i want to swap in a non-vtec, NON FRANKENSTINE motor to my del sol.

i would like to hit 160hp without tearing into the block. i have read that with an LS intake manifold, ecu, jdm 4-1 header, gsr trans, etc, a b20 can make around 150 to the wheels. with crower 404's it should be able to make around 160...

however, i may want to turbo it in the future, and i know that the b18 is stronger for boost, due to the thicker sleeves...

Now, what i am asking is this:

is there a way to get an ls to aroudn the same power as the said b20, and keep it reliable (no spray, turbo, etc) and have it be a good daily driver?

you won't make 150 to the wheels with listed mods on a b20....

150 to the wheels is easy on a B20Z

I made 155whp with Just the LS IM/TB, a 3" shortram, DC 4-2-1, and a 2.25" testpipe back.

With a less restrictive muffler (using a chambered), and the LS cams instead of the B20 I probably would have gotten closer to 160.

My previous motor was a B18B with 404s, same setup except a milled head (roughly 9.4:1 CR) I made 165whp.

160 to the wheels is obtainable on a B18 w/o touching the block as shown by StyleTeg!

Search around and you will find his dyno sheet along with others dynos!

does that mean if it was done with a b20 it would have similar hp and more torque?

Seems that way, however the ppl that seem to make the most power(195+whp) have B20's!

People use the B18A/B18B because they get the whole package cheap. You can't get a package deal with a B20. You need alot of different stuff from different cars.

You must have something else you are not talking about. The typical power output for a non-VTEC B20 with an LS P75 ECU, LS intake manifold, header, exhaust, and a good aftermarket intake is around 135-140WHP. I sure wish MY B20 put out that much power!

Nothing beyond tuning, but I base lined at 150whp.

Its not abnormal either, I know others that have gotten simmilar power with simmilar modifications.

Keep in mind these are the higher comp B20's, not the 8.8 ones.

as in b20z...

so basically b20z or b18b, no b20b's.

StyleTeg is right, higher compression makes a difference!

Actually that is a common misconception. There are some 9.6:1 JDM B20B's, I think they are from 00+. All usdm B20B's are low compression I beleave.

My motor is a JDM B20B, yet I have the high comp pistons. Easy way to tell? Does it have a knock sensor.

I have b20b4 but the compression ratios are like this:
96-98 JDM or USDM 8.8.1

99-00 JDM 0r USDM 9.6.1

If Im correct if not please let me know.</TD></TR></TABLE>

Sorry for the thread jack, but I have a quick question. So only the high compression b20's have a knock sensor. So if i were to call HMO, order a b20 and specifiy I wanted one with a knock sensor, It should be the high compression b20???
